Hi

I have a problem getting my bike to reach its potential top speed and suspect its a problem with the ignition. I have tested the coils and have found the pick up coil (pulsar) is out of spec - it should be around 95-140ohms and mine reads 240ohms.

What effect would something like this have on the bikes running (at the top end)

Possibly, but if it's not totally open or closed circuit, then it'll probably work. Also can depend on things like how exactly you measured it.

If the bike won't rev up, and you are sure it's not the ignition, then the problem is more likely that the ignition advance has failed (usually built into the ECU/CDI, usually never fails and there's nothing you can do anyway) or the ignition coil is failing and can't recover quickly enough between sparks - very rare but does happen.

Hi the bike revs fine in every gear to the redline except when it gets to around 85-90mph. It then does not progress much further like it used to - carbs have been cleaned and balanced and everything else appears to be ok - except it wont go as fast as it used to!

err, you realise it's probably just knackered, then! Would look at getting a compression test done. You'll probably find it's dragging one piston about.

done a compression test - both within 2psi of each other and plenty of compression

I am really stumped as to what it is

... me too, then, I'd still be more inclined to think it was fuel, though, ignition problems tend to kick in and out so you get surges/drops in power, not just a lack of it.

Also, don't overlook mechanical things like seized wheels/brakes/chains, can easily knock off the top end performance.

strange thing is I have repalced the fuel filter and the fuel lines. Also has new chain and sprockets, new tyres and the brakes have been overhauled!

I am really stuck on this one....
