I had the joy of riding in driving rain in an open face helmet today (well not proper open face, but an MX style lid, so exposed face i.e. no visor).

Feck that smarts - felt like riding into hail (think it was just torrential rain, not hail BTW)!!! Shocked

Does anyone use an open face (or MX) lid on the road?? If so you are mad or have a face of leather!! Very Happy

Heavy rain is an excellent exfoliant. Try riding by the sea on a windy day for added abrasion and 're-finishing'.

Yep, I use mine with a buff and goggles though so there's only a tiny bit of my forehead slightly exposed. I did a 390 mile round trip with it the other day through torrential rain and 3 flash floods and the rain wasn't hurting my face that much. I find they're much louder than regular lids though so earplugs are compulsory for anything more than going to the shops. I'm probably the only person in the world who thinks they look cool on big road bikes aswell but then my general taste and cool parameters are probably crap Laughing

Never used an open faced lid but I do ride (well, when I used to ride in the rain Laughing ) with the visor up, even in winter. Your face does get very cold and sting but hey. Smile

I guess it was more my lips that stung than my face itself ... I found opening my mouth and sticking my tongue out really helped!! Cool

My face looks like it is stuck in the lift doors with an open face or flip up lid. Mind you i do have a face that only a mother could love, If only I knew where she ran off to when I was born.

Normal rain was fine, it was just this driving rain that felt like it was hail - but then I guess any object at what 50-60mph is going to feel pretty solid ... like bugs!! Laughing

I ride all year round with my mx style helmet, and have done for couple years.

Does hurt sometimes, but oh well. Ifs it driving rain i tend to tilt my head forwards so most of it hits the 'spoiler' bit that sticks out on the front (not sure what its called ?). This also is a good sun block, when the suns in your face.

If i get hit in the lips i'll suck my lips in - like im sucking an orange, or open my mouth. Im glad no-one can see me Thumbs Up

I remember once i was on the dual carrigeway keeping to the normal 60-70 mph flow, was rainy and very windy. Just had been green laning and my goggles were minging so i wasent wearing them, now thats open faced. Worst 5 minutes riding of my life Thumbs Down

I think it is just called a 'peak'.

I tried docking my head a bit so the peak took the worst off my face (had goggles on anyway) but I couldn't get my lips out of the flow!! Crying or Very sad

Good to see I am not the only one that thinks its a bit tender/smarts a bit when hitting the lips!! Thumbs Up

Get a baby bath, fill it with sand then ram your face into it for about a hour each day, soon have you ready for a open face in winter.

I wear an open face but I cheat and use an aviator visor and a mask when the weather is unpredicable. I learnt my lesson when I got caught in a hailstorm, it felt like I was being bead blasted.

You can get MX style lids with the peak and a visor as far as I know. By the looks of it you can't fully open the visor because the peak gets in the way but still It's got to be better than getting your face pelted. Was thinking about getting one next time I get a helmet.

Yep I use MX helmet and goggles in the summer months then back to full face in colder winter months. But as KLR600 mentioned they are noisy at any speed above 40mph and yes the rain does sting but that’s just part of the fun of it.
I would rather have the cool breeze on my face in the hotter months than sweating under a full face lid.

Yeah I ride in a full face helmet but with the visor up most of the time, too.

Come to think of it, the visor is a bit broken, so it would be pointless riding with it down, it would probably just snap off and cut me in the face Laughing

I just do what everyone else who says they ride visor-up does, kind of tilt my head to avoid the worst onslaught, or ride [even] slow[er] so the pointy stingy thing doesn't hurt so bad, lol.

I came off the other day due to rain - visor fogged up couldnt see nothing popped it off and lost control as the road and my tyres were just drenched and could barely see due to the rain in my face.

Luckily nothing damaged apart a bruise on my leg and arm the following day Smile

It's my eyes that bother me. I carry some safety glasses with me after a dodgy experience last year in the icy rain and salt totalling my visor.

Rode home with it open... looking at the road in between blinks.

So now I keep a clean set of safety specs to chuck on. Prepared I am Wink
