On my way to Tesco of all places!
I only got my bike on Monday night,so after riding around the streets near my house to get a feel for the bike and practice manoeuvres and stuff,I decided to take it out for my first proper ride out yesterday. I headed for my local Tesco,to get a few things and it was all going well, not too much traffic on the roads and decent weather for a ride. As I was getting near Tesco,a stupid tw4t in a Volvo pulled right out in front of me,without looking.
It was a bit of a blur really, but I think I braked far too hard with the back brake, swerved and came off the bike on the left-hand side. I landed on the road and rolled a couple of times, but only my left side is damaged. I got straight up and tried to lift the bike, but I'm only a wee lass so I struggled a bit,but luckily a crackin' bloke from the RAC was behind me and got out of his van and helped me lift my bike. By this time I was feeling really faint and sick, but the only injuries I have are a massive hole in my left knee,a skinned hip and bruises just about everywhere.
The RAC bloke gave me a lift to A&E and put my bike in the back of his van, bless him. So,an X-Ray,a local anaesthetic while the wound was cleaned and 17 stitches later, here I am at home, living to fight another day What's annoyed me though is the fact that he must have seen me,I was wearing my illuminous vest and two Scotchlite armbands and it was broad daylight Still,I'm not the first and I certainly won't be the last.
The damage to the bike isn't nearly as bad as I thought, just cosmetic scratches on the fairings,a buggered gear lever and I've broken the end of the clutch lever.
I await the link to the BCF Spill Counter

That's the way to have a first proper ride, haha!
Glad to hear that you're more or less ok and even the bike survived with a few scratches.
It's unlucky that on your 'first proper' ride you already encountered such a situation. Reacting to these is even more tricky then later on, so I can understand breaking a bit too heavily.
Oh and here's the link for the spill counter. |

It's irrelevant if there wasn't a collision, and it would probably go 50-50 anyway because the OP lost control and went down. They would probably argue that a more experienced rider would have stopped in time.
(note I'm not saying that the OP is in the wrong, I did exactly the same thing a year ago!)

If you are more comfortable in jeans, have you looked at draggin jeans? Like a normal pair, but the have a Kevlar lining in the important places bum, knees and hips.
They are expensive at around £125. Then again most women I know would pay that for normal jeans anyway
only drawback I've found with them is going shopping or meeting someone on the bike, they are a little bit warmer, for the added protection they give there worth every penny.

Incoming gore pics!
As said you live and learn, next time it happens you'll know that the amount of back brake you applied last time was too much.
Glad you're okay, get back on that bike! ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Sorry to hear about the off, I had a very similar situation a few weeks ago - I managed to stay on but through luck rather than skill, I think. Roads were flooded and I ended up doing a fun little fishtail skid when the car in front decided to emergency stop for his turn
Still, things like this are the best way to learn. You'll be watching eagle eyed at every driver waiting to turn out onto your path from now on! |

I had a similar accident start of this year, a bloke didn't see me and pulled out into my path. Managed to drop alot of my speed and take evasive action, but the front wheel locked and flicked me off. The bike ended up bouncing off the kerb and narrowly missed the car. The driver admited liability to the police and the insurance company paid out.
GWS and invest in some decent gear, especially if you're a learner.
Ohh and we need pics, bike, gear and injuries. ____________________ ZX6R C6F.

I had 2 crashes, the textile trousers were the best buy for me.
Bought them the day before, too. They give you more confidence, too.
I still wear jeans from time to time but rarely feel as safe...
Good gear is a must. I'd hate to see the state of my bottom half had i not been wearing those trousers, the road ripped through the trousers, the CE armour and the inner lining.
And i still had a little gash on me...
GWS kirsty, and make sure you get some decent trousers, you never know when some twat in a volvo will pull out on you again
And glad you're getting back out there, too.
The amount of people who have one crash and decide biking's not for them...

Ouch!
Glad both you and bike okay, I presume your ego hurts more than your injuries...it's embarrassing to do it in front of people.
And, at least it was a slow one.
