Hi,

Anyone out there know of someone close to them with ADHD? If so, can you share the love and tell what techniques you have found that worked well, and what didn't work so well?

Google's very good and brings up technical stuff, but I'm looking for coping strategies.

Any of the drugs out there helped at all, or does it change the personality too much?

Looking for any first hand advice and help rather than just "I knew of a kid with ADHD, he was a real pain in the ass".

Thanks

Do a search for ADHD.

I rant alot about it.

In short, Amphetamines are very very helpful for me.

Laughing

Feel free to PM any questions, you may notice I'm not particularly normal when it comes to 'coping'.

Depends what you want to do really. Day to day I'd say just lump it, it was only around exams when I had to revise that it truly became a problem. The rest of the time I never really notice it.

No offence, but from reading your posts, it mostly involves using illegal (amphetamines) drugs. Whilst I'm not against illegal drugs, the guys mother might. Laughing

The prescribed treatment to ADHD is pretty much the same shizzle.

Wink

I assumed it was tips for you.

Advice for others.

Put them on Ritalin, they get stuck on it for life but have a 'normal' life. Will be an absolute delight I'm sure.

Go the hard route, have a shit life at school, if they're intelligent enough they'll get through it through basal intellect rather then graft. Eventually they'll learn their own techniques and tells for when they are being a tit. Then they'll be a delight.
Higher education will however be an utter swine, which no matter what you do requires sitting down and memorising large chunks of information.
Hence the speed.

As mentioned, Ritalin is just amphetamines. As is dexedrine (although that is better as it doesn't affect the body so much).

If I had my time again, I don't know if Ritalin would be my answer. Thinking

As I've alluded to, school /seriously/ sucked for me. I got away with it by being a know-it-all sod, which meant that despite being a 'problem child' I still stayed in all the top sets. If I wasn't so lucky, I'd of gotten lost in the system.

Dyslexia gets attention, ADHD is always treated as an excuse. So never really expect much sympathy. Which is why I never offer it as any excuse, and very rarely offer it as an explanation.

Yep. I forget where I mentioned it, but it would be a great way to test if people have ADD/ADHD or not.

Chuck them some speed and give them something boring and requiring focus to do.

'Normal' people would be bouncing off the walls, us weirdos would sit down and patiently do it.

But you can't seem to explain this to the lay person without them shouting 'crack addict' at you repeatedly (seriously, read some of those previous threads).

I don't really know a lot, except do not go on long car journeys with a sufferer in the car, who about an hour from home announces he is abstaining from taking his tablets this weekend. Oh joy!!! Shocked

I suppose it depends on the age of the person with ADHD? and what works for one person with ADHD as a copeing strategy will not always work with another person, I have dealt with a lot of situations, Autism, Tourettes etc but have had little to do with ADHD so I cant comment personally, I did look after a child with borderline ADHD but he wasnt on medication and also had other issues, none of which including the ADHD were obvious to anyone who didnt know the situation, but I am sure there will be a group in your area for parents/relatives of people with ADHD and also internet forums are a usefull resource (try yahoo groups) as these will be people that are dealing with it day in and day out

A good friend of mine had/has ADHD. He was one of the few that actually had it at my school, rather than the influx of overprescribed cunts who got away with literally anything because their parents couldn't be arsed.
He was insanely unruly in class, at home and even when out with friends. He refused to take his pills and ended up just giving them to people wanting to get high.
Sometimes the results were funny in that he'd act out and give us a jolt of amusement, another time we were casually walking down the street when he flipped/got bored and put a brick through a mercedes window.
AFAIK he's fairly normal now, but I rarely see him. He had a weird quirk where he'd play some theme tune by clicking his fingers and slapping his hands in rhythm, I always found it akin to my autistic cousin clapping his hands when bored.

Anyhow, here's how to control it:
Clout round the ear and a huge doobie. That crazy motherbitch is too high to get distracted now.

Two of my sons have ADHD. The eldest is 22 and he copes better without Ritalin than he ever did with it. He always felt like he was in a foggy daze all the time and hated it, so he stopped. He just kept himself busy and when he felt he started to get too freaky he went fishing. It gave him a chance to sort himself out without annoying anyone and it works for him.

My youngest is a different entity entirely cos he is waaaaaaay too bouncy and has recently started to take a drug called Medikinet. It's a slow release drug that takes about an hour to kick in of a morning and keeps him calm at school without the effects that Ritalin gave his brother. It's helped him enormously and he is able to concentrate on is school work now, this is also in conjunction with regular counselling from the local children's mental health team. He is slowly but surely learning how to cope with his ADHD and understanding how to recognise when his behaviour changes so he can calm himself down.

My Youngest son has ADHD. (He's 12.)

He was prescribed Ritalin and although he was great on it, the comedowns were amazing and he eventually refused to take it. He's now been prescribed Concerta, which is a slow release version of the drug, working over 12 hours. This means that there's no high-low-high-low throughout the day as ritalin stops working every 4 hours.

I don't actually know what information/advice you are looking for, but feel free to PM me with questions and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Concerta is the same as Medikinet, the Drugs actual name is Methylphenidate. It has helped my youngest son enormously and all we need to do with him now is give him a gentle push in the right direction instead of having to fight for every inch.

Ritalin is the same drug, but the difference being that Concerta and Medikinet are formulated to be a slow release as opposed to an instant release the Ritalin gives. As more research is done into how the drug affects the brain then further advances will be made in how it can be tailored better to give the maximum therapy from the smallest doseage.

I believe that Ritalin is being phased out as the treatment of choice for ADHD. That's a good thing as I don't know of a single ADHD sufferer that liked the stuff.

Here's a link giving info about Methylphenidate for those who don't know what it is.

Methylphenidate
