My daughter is putting us under pressure to get her ears pierced ... as all her friends seem to be getting it done.
The missus is ok with it ... but I have some reservations.
The main one, is that she is currently perfect and unblemished.
ie: My little girl .. no piercings .. no tattoos .. no scars etc etc.
The thought of her having holes made in her ears just doesnt seem right.

Am I being an old fuddy ? or is 9yrs old a bit too young ?

(note: I have already put the kibosh on her getting a mobile phone)

From experience 9 year old girls (Brownies) aren't able to properly look after pierced ears.
They struggle to take them out/put them back in again for activities or bed.
They lose earrings and get upset when they do.
Wait until she's old enough to afford it herself as a reward for something - like finishing her GCSEs!

I'm not a dad, but if I had a decision to make like this, i'd say wait until you are 16 or whatever age it is they can do it without parental consent. I'm not fussed about earrings generally, just find them mostly offputting on adults (same as my view on excessive rings and bangles), they look terrible on young girls.

My g/f's daughter had her ears pierced a while back, she is 9. There was massive over dramatisation every time they needed cleaning, twisting or whatever it is you do with them. Tears and whinging the lot. In the end they were taken out and believe they have healed up again now.

If she is a particularly sensitive 9 year old i'd say definately leave it a few years, until they can deal with the mild pain/discomfort and responsibility of preventing infection like an adult.

So no basically, but i'm not a parent so I guess my view doesnt count Razz

I had to wait until I was a teenager and ended up having them done shortly after my 13th birthday. I hasten to add that this had been a re-negotiation with my parents who had previously said not until I was 18, so I thought it was a total coup! Mr. Green

I took my Mum to have hers done for her 70th birthday, but I think that it's probably a tad unreasonable to make your daughter wait that long!! Laughing

Let it be a reward for becoming 13, or exams or something.

I'd go with letting her have it done. Go with her and insist on nothing but small gold studs until she's older.
Otherwise she'll end up having it done round a mates with an ice cube and a needle, wearing her hair down so you won't notice it, and getting an infection that makes her ear drop off.

I would say no. Too young and could end up looking chavvy. Get her a dirt bike instead.

I voted no, but she is a beautiful non chavy looking girl, I don't think they will detract from that Smile

Perhaps compromise and say, for your 10th birthday?

She's almost in high school so I don't see why not. It might even make up for the lack of mobile. Laughing

It's not as if she's a chav baby having it forced on her. I hate that. Smile

Wait til she completes her PhD, then let her get the first one. She can have the second when she gets married.

Let her have them. But let her save up to get it done via pocket money.

I'd say it's important-ish to let your kid keep up with the others to a point. Stops them getting picked on and taunted.

Yep you're a fuddy-duddy. Wink
She is old enough to understand what is involved.
I've a similar problem. My 14yr old daughter wants her belly button peirced. My turn to be a fuddy-duddy. Told her no and ask again when she's 16. I've seen the mess a belly-button infection can make.
Kids eh

I dont see the issue with a 9 year old with ear peircings in all honesty, just have to vet the kind of thing she puts in, simple little ones, not the huge ring ones, they look proper fit on some chav girls Shifty

I had mine done at 8 after my dad had said I couldnt have them done til I was 13, I nagged so much he gave in.

I would say yes but make sure that she understands about cleaning and turning - only you know if she is mature enough to take on this. Also I would go for small hoops rather than studs, they are easy to turn and if they get caught will open and come out rather than tear the ear which is likely to happen with studs - they are also much more comfortable to sleep in.

What rubbish.

I had mine when I was six and never had any problems with them, whether due to hygiene or activities, including those involving wearing helmets, or normal winter life of wearing beanies. I've still got my first pair, the ones my dad bought for me when I got my ears pierced and didn't want little hoops, gold & diamond ones. Well, it was a piece of glass, but to me, it was a diamond. Laughing

I lost very few earrings, and when I did, it didn't upset me, as I knew they weren't expensive. Besides, it was a good excuse for my dad to buy me new ones.

Maybe I'm particularly intolerant to small children but I had no sympathy for those crying at bedtime because their ears were a gooey, crispy sticky mess, nor those who had lost an earring outside somewhere and felt it necessary to recruit half the other girls to go and look for it.

*shrug*

It depends on the child, guess our lot of brat-things are very sensitive souls! Laughing

On one side I'd agree on the 'keeping up with the other kids' thing; throughout my childhood I was always the one way out with whatever the current fashion was. In a lot of ways it definitely wasn't good, but in others it might have been. I'm less *bothered* by many material possessions, but I also tend to accumulate bigger toys to play on these days.
Note that we're talking a bit more 'serious' unfashionabilty. For instance for most of the time living with my mum (for the few years I lived solely with my dad we did have one) we didn't have a TV at all.

The other side though, is that society is really pushing young girls to be grown up from a really early age and I don't think this is a great thing. Probably explains why so many adult women aren't really that interesting people - as all they've programmed themselves to think about is looking good (in their own minds; personally I think people look better without piercings.)
The number of pre-teens and teens wearing playboy logo'd stuff sickens me - undoubtedly the same parents that have rather tabloid views in regards to 'paedophiles' - well stop making your kids sex objects, then!
