VIN and HPI

I put my ST in to get it's MOT done last week but it couldn't be done because the VIN on the VOSA system didn't match up with the one on the bike. I was still waiting for the V5 to arrive so I couldn't confirm with them that the number was infact correct.
I went home and done one of the cheap HPI checks, this also said that my VIN didn't match their records. I was starting to worry a wee bit.
Anyway, the V5 came back on Saturday and the numbers match up. So how come the DVLA records arn't the same as the one's on whatever system the HPI use ? And how do I go about getting it sorted ?

Has the bike had a frame change ? And instead of changing the plate from the new frame, they have used the old one...

I would expect that the HPI would use the same database as the VOSA.

So either someone has written the VIN down wrong on the V5 or they have had trouble reading the one on the bike and got numbers mixed up.

It's not a plate, the numbers are stamped on the headstock. I called the original selling garage and as far as they are aware the bike is original. I also called the DVLA before I received the V5 back, obviously they couldn't tell me what the number should be but confirmed that no changes had been made to the V5.

If they have changed the frame then it would probably be for a new one which probably comes without a number and is stamped with a number (normally the one of the frame that is being replaced).

That the V5C has the right frame number on it matching the actual frame and according to the DVLA has not been updated (suspect if it had the DVLA would insist on reregistering the bike or sticking a Q plate on it) suggests that the problem is with VOSA.

All the old paperwork ties up with the current VIN and plate, it was MOT'd last year too.
The MOT'er says when he brings it up on the system he needs the first registration date and it will update itself, whether it updates the whole system HPI use I'm not sure.

so who do I contact to make sure everything is as it should be ? The DVLA have the correct details, where do the HPI companies get their data from ? I'm not that worried about it, it may only come into play again when the bike is sold and that wonlt be in the near future.

These are often down to an input error on the registration document - I've lost count of the number of times the DVLA have changed a "Z" for a "2", or something similar.

HPI and other check services are driven directly from DVLA records, so if DVLA gets it wrong, so does everyone else.

But my V5 is correct, it matches my bike exactly !

I'll give them a call tomorrow to try and sort it out.
