help me Choose ?

Hier,

Since joining BCF i have learnt that my prevoius choice for touring with a trailer and sometimes with a firend pillion was woefully inadequate.

Now i have got tpft insurance quotes for many bikes ranging from 600cc to 1400 cc with the bikes being sports touring and ranging from 2 to 3.5 grand. They all come in quoted at the 3 - 400 mark.

Im a big lad mind and used to ride scramblers a bit when i was young, and then i had a 55 mph 50cc for a few months when i was 16/17.

Im taking all my tests in the near future in quick succession and ive ordered a theory DVD. I have had my car licence since 18 years old and im now 33, drove my own car from 18 - 28 then a commercial van until 2 years ago.

Now my main requirements for a sports tourer are:

Torky tourque bike

Reasonable passenger seat, ie not tiny.

Realiable make.

Easy to service and replace parts.

I imagine around 100 bhp.

No fairings but would still consider a bike with them.

No dropdown/racing handlebars.

not to fast and good/forgiving handling, with the handling being most important.

I will be buying the bike of ebay of a seller with good feedback and the bike will havto have full service history etc.

So as i know f all about bikes really, although determined to learn and enjoy, i need fellow bcf members to steer me in the right direction and into making a well informed choice.

I like the look of the bandit bikes and a few others, but would like to narrow the search down so i can watch the selected bikes on fleabay instead of the elongated searches that im currently doing.

Your help and advice is much appreciated.

It could, not much wrong with the speed triple. I reckon his asking price seems steep though - nearly £3K for an 11 year old bike??

so at present im looking at bandit, fazer and triple.

not buying yet as dont want it sat in garden not insured, although if what im looking for turns up not far away and for a reasonable price then might have to take the plunge.

im definetly willing to pay a bit extra for a really well looked after bike.

Do some research on tank range. It makes a big difference when touring. If one of those bikes will take you 50 miles further between fillups, it's a big plus point.

my idea of touring is somewhat different to the norm, a bigger tank would be nice but its not really a consideration for me as much as say genuine mileage and service history is.

Uncomfortable with a crap tank range.

You should pass your test and actually ride some things to see what you like, window shopping is largely pointless when you can't try them out.

shame about last bike looked good.

my intended pillion passenger visited me form down south and is bottling it partly caus some idiot took him on a scare ride overtaking on blind bends etc.

so it makes things easier for me, i could even consider the bonny again, but you can get a bloody good sports tourer for around 3 grand.

you right in that it would be good to try some out, but im trying to get a great bike at a great price which might involve just buying one of ebay.

As for tanks i dont intend on doing more than a tankfull journey in one go anyway.

If i get a good bike at a good price and i dont like it i could just sell it, it would have to be pretty bad for me to do that.

Brilliant bikes, Good looks, Forgiving. 900's got a lot more tourque. Looks good, and if you do get the pillion back quite a nice ride for them (So im told).

liking the hornet, 50 quid more on insurance but thats ok.

i presume parts and sevicing would be easy with a honda 2.

what i would like to determine is what year and mileage i should be looking at for around 3000 pounds ? for any of the suggested bikes be it bandit or hornet.

ive gone of the fazer and the triples are a bit over budget. I cant spend much more than 3 grand as im only doing tpft only.

Hornet are cbr engines or 900 blade engines. Basically the only other things to survive the apocalypse other than toyota hilux's and cockroaches.

Servicing is as you said is cheap and parts are plentiful

mileage is not a real issue with these bikes. There have been a many with over 100,000miles on them with no major upsets.

Price wise i got my 99 hornet for 2k. with 12k on the clock.
In 2001 i belive they had some minor updates. (que other hornet owners to correct me) with the 17L tank and 17inc front wheel. In 06 got a nice IMO bodywork upgrade, with upside down forks and more.

this cbr blade thing makes me think there to fast for me atm, and as for upsidedown forks i would nt recomend as you have to wheely everywhere !

Engine is a de-tuned cbr engine from the early 90's, alot of power but you have to rev it hard like most IL4's, but got very good town mannors.

Well it is a inline 4 stroke but il4 means inline 4 cylinders. Oh well.
