I've had some bad luck with my bike cosmetically. Some pretty serious damage to a fairing and none of it was my fault!
I just got the bike back from a service yesterday (200 smackers), the guy working on my bike has been working on my bikes for about 5 years. He pointed out to me some damage yesterday which i know wasn't there about a week ago because ive been checking the bike over reguarly.
I know every small scratch on my bike im sure, you cant be overly fussed about them when the bike is used everyday and is about 10 years old but its good to know how you're doing.
What im after now is a repair i think, but i wanted opinions from you guys as to the best way to tackle this. He says fairing repairing looks pretty good if done properly.

The first pictures here is from when my neighboured knocked over my bike and cracked the fairing. He picked it back up and denied he saw anything, i knew it was him (long story). This is on the front fairing BTW.

The second is the one spotted yesterday.
This is pretty bad, cracked all around the bolts, looks like something has lent against it hard.

Any idea roughly how much to repair??? (if possible!)

I know that fibre glass can become quite brittle and fragile in that it doesn't like to bend and flex like t would have done years before.

I had the odd little crack in my nose cone at the front but none like that near the studs. With all the repair and paint costs to match the colour scheme would a second hand one be a better option?

I know that it doesn't actually play a major part in how the bike runs, ie its cosmetic, but I know that it puts a downer on things especially when its not down to you.

I trust you have paid him back in kind?

I hope the OP lived up to his name on that one.

No i didn't kill him.
I only realised after pondering over a few things he mentioned because he made up a story about someone trying to nick it. When i found out my old man stopped me doing anything. I've told his wife i know, his wife is my sisters best friend and i know they got money problems.
Anyways, body repair....how much is this sort of work?

The only way to really repair it would be to plastic weld the damage. Its hard to estimate how much it would cost without looking at the back of the panel to understand how much of the damage is just in the paint but, at an extremely rough guess, with welding, paint matching and stickers it could cost anywhere between £200 and £400. Chances are that you would have to spray the entire panel to get the paint to match.

It may be that all the cracking on the side is in the paint and lacquer so you would get away with rubbing it down and spraying.

It might be worth sending the pictures to someone like https://www.farroutpaintwork.co.uk/ and asking their opinion.

I've just had a chat with someone that had a 6" crack in their seat unit welded and the bloke charged him £30.

Would be cheaper to get a good nose one but mine is black and silver from 2001. Not easy to find. Sad

Ill give some places a call and see what they say.

Believe it or not I could repair all of that damage using Plastech. Well all except the paint work that is.

So, still in shock about this damage. As im off to the Bulldog tomorrow i went to have a look at the damage and see if i can sort it some what.

As soon as i started taking off the lower fairing bolt, all the bits of cracks just got very bad and soon started to break off. There has obviously been a knock as it was twisted a little, i decided to just get it all off.
Remembering he said 'i didnt take the fairings off' i proceeded to look for any signs that he had. I took off the fairing bolts and theres the proof.....he's used copper grease on the bolts to re-assemble it all....i was the last person to have them off.

So im calling him today, im unsure how it will go or what to say.
Im just going in quite bluntly but not guns blazing.
What do you guys think?

Cheers

I used to know a plastic welder, but he died last summer. But, yes I'd go with Sickpup and the plastec way!!! Thumbs Up Then afterwards find yourself a good sprayer (again I know a brilliant / cheap one) but you'd have to go to Norfolk to his workshop. Tad far from your neck of woods.

Are you saying that the mechanic did the damage?
This is who no one other than me works on my bikes.

The trouble is that, as you say, you have known the guy for five years. You will have built a relationship of trust with him and he has broken that trust.
By pointing out the damage I think he was playing a double bluff, "I am showing you this so that proves I could not have done it".

What you do is difficult, It depends on your nature but I think the words "I do not really want this to end up in the Small Claims Court but.....".

I took my old 600RR for a service a few years back and when I got the bike home I noticed a massive crack in the front fairing. I knew I had not done it and knew it wasn't there before the service, so I took it to the dealer the next day and spoke calmly to the person on the service desk.. She went and got the manager who said he will have a word with the mechanic who worked on my bike.
I got a call later that day from the manager who said the mechanic denied doing any damage and the manager believed him, but out of courtesy said they will help to replace the fairing..... Which told me he knew he was guilty, just didn't want to lost the custom and prevent any bad reputation to come from the incident.

The manager ordered a brand new replacement and they got it fitted and sorted for me within a week...

My 7R is a 2001, black and silver one. Can you order a front fairing like that?

Thanks for that Ariel, i think thats the way i first thought, i wanted it to go smoothly, not turn into a battle.

Just an idea.
