Bikeshop bullshit

Im thinking of selling my NS1 so I go around a couple of shops to get some quotes as a trade-in. The bikes in good nick and very clean except from a couple of scratches on the front leftside fairing sticker. One guy(prick) in a shop says he'll give me €2,200 but that was before he saw it. Anyway outside we go and he inspects the bike and sees the scratched sticker. So we head back in but now he decides the'll only give me €2000 for the bike cos of the sticker. Im like "it dosent cost €200 to get a new sticker you wanker". Is this guy screwing me or does a scratched sticker really depreciate the cost of a bike that much? i really want to trade it in there cos its the only shop that has the bike I want. He did agree to throw a top-box in though.
Ideas...??

well to him it shows that somethings happend to the bike like being dropped, crashed etc..... he will also get less money for it if there is a scratch on the stickers cos whoever goes to buy it next will wonder why its scratched..... and hes only human at the end of the day Smile

if you run a shop youd try getting something for as little as you can.... why dont you buy a new sticker and try selling it somewhere else for 2200 ??

Well...I'd say that he has a fair point...most mags etc. advise you to polish up the bike before selling anyway, to give the buyer less to pick on...I'd advise you either take the stickers off completely, or find replacements...

I worked in a garage for a week during the summer holidays when I was 17. Most of my time was spent cleaning the dodgy cars, rather than fixing them. Apparantly shiny windows are one of the best (subconsious presumably) selling points for a car!

Well I polished it up nicely and another bikeshop guy remarked how clean it was so his problem was just with the sticker. The fairing isn't cracked anywhere and there aint scratches anywhere else so its obvisious that it wasnt in a crash. (I just scraped it off a kerb)
I would get a new sticker but they aint too easy to get. Im sure the bikeshop guy could get one easily after I traded in the bike so I dont think its worth a €200 drop in value!!
Ill go in tomorrow and re-negotiate with him. Thing is he'll sell the bike off for €2,500 once I leave.

I talked to him again today and he didnt budge so I agreed with a trade-in price of €2000. So ill be getting the Varadero 125 now for only €2000 which aint bad. Topbox thrown in too. He gave me a nice little story though how a father wanted to buy a Transalp for himself and the Varadero for his son so id better hurry up and buy.
So i will no longer be a 2-stroke, NSR, maniac but instead a respectable, safe, 4-stroke v-twin old man. Nooooooo!

Have you got a test ride on it?
If not I would *seriously* suggest you get one before you buy it... the specs do suggest that it's won't exactly be an 'upgrade' from a NS-1

a v stroke 125 v twin. thats about the heaviest 125 i can think of, and probably a worse power to weight ratio than a harley. why do you want one of those?

At least your bike is a cruiser though, with low down weight while the Varadero is a trail-style bike with, presumably a high CoG

My NS1 only topped about 80mph (with wind) so the Varadero aint much slower, very little infact. I know its seems slow compared to your NSR 125's but Im used to the slower NS1.
Im gettin it because;
a) lower insurance
b) more reliable
c) more comfortable
d) nicer (bigger) sounding engine
e) more room for the girlfriend.

Ive read up on the bike and talked to other owners and they all say its a great bike,very comfy riding position. The only downfall I heard was it only could just keep up with motorway speeds, a problem I faced also with my NS1.
Ill have it by tomorrow though and ill let you know what its like.

Dont worry though lads, by next summer ill have enuf cash for a CBR 250 (fingers crossed)!

motorway speeds.... 55mph sitting in the slow lane getting blown around by wind and surrounded by trucks.
just dont do it, this is madness. if speed and insurance scare you that much, get a cg. lots of room for the girlfriend there. pass you test, get a real bike, just run a mile from that thing.

Its nicer than the TDR 125 and is very similar in looks to the Transalp and Varadero 1000. I know it aint a cool speedy little race bike but thats not all im interested in. I like tourer type bikes aswell.
Robby, ithe Varadero does 75ish mph so since the speed limit is 70mph on motorways, I aint gona be in the slow lane with the trucks. A CG is a trully god awful piece of machiery.

I reckon the TDR is loads nicer, the engine, being a 2stroke, should be cable of plenty more, the chassis I would expect, would be better handling, which will also be helped by less weight.

I don't know about ireland, but 70 usually *is* sitting in the slowlane with the trucks in the UK (M25 excepting). I've often been on the m4 with light traffic, sitting at just under 100 in the left lane and had plenty of cars going signficantly faster going past me.

. Okay the front brake's pretty shit and the engine's not exactly enthralling, though has got a reasonable enough amount of tourqe for a 125. However it's been around for over twenty years, for a reason: it's a really simple design that works well.
