Riders wearing glasses?

I was wondering what is your opinion on, wearing glasses while biking. Is it safe? Would I be better off going for contact lenses? I have never worn those… not sure how would that go down…

didn't get on with contact lenses. too expensive and made my eyes water when riding in the cold.

I use to have problem with my visor steaming up, so I bought helmet with one of those… things that stop that… So... Now my glasses steam up!
That is one thing…

And another… When I came off the bike (hit a car), glass came out of my glasses… Although it hasn’t got sharp ages it started doubt in my mind…

Maybe I should have started with those two points…

I rode with glasses whilst I was learning and for a few weeks after passing test.
In summer it is ok, but come winter I would suggest contact lenses. I honestly believe riding without glasses (depending on how badly you need those glasses, e.g I only need them for reading small writing on the board at uni etc) in Winter is less dangerous than having them and the visor steam up in the cold, then add to that dreaded winter sun (which is hard enough to see without steam!) and I was riding blind for the best part of 200 metres in a 40 zone.

TL;DR, Get contacts.

i wore glasses for about 20 years, now i use monthly disposable contacts and they are awesome.. i find them much less hassle when taking a helmet on & off etc, plus it feels a little less claustrophobic in there

works for me, not for everyone though. maybe you could do a trial run of them for a few months, see which you prefer.

Was tempted to get an anti-mist pin lock visor and then realised my glasses would just get foggy

Only just started riding so not sure what to do, might get some cheap contacts from the internet and see how I go. I also referee at the weekend and showing up wearing glasses gets me no end of stick.

I read somewhere about a company in europe doing prescription visors, pricey but could be worth it in the long run.

I too used to wear glasses all the time and had problems:

They steam up (found especially in winter when slowing down, like on the approach to a busy roundabout).

Peripheral vision is compromised as you can see around the frame (which leads to...).

The frame/edge of the lens that is distracting.

Because the lens is away from the eye, objects appear to be smaller.

When it rains it can be very distracting having drops of water on the lenses and no way to clean them (you can't just swipe across with your glove like on your visor).

Forgetting to take them off before you put your helmet on or take it off can be painful (flip-fronts help with this but don't offer the same chin protection as a full-face).

So I tried contacts and haven't looked back. They are great. If you're trying contacts for the first time, go to your optician cos there's quite a lot to it... I've also heard good things about laser eye surgery.

I've worn glasses while biking for the last thirty years, yes, there are occasions when they've steamed up, but when I remember to clean them with that wax stick thingy, or Bob Heath Visor cleaner, there's rarely a problem.

I have been known to take my helmet with me when buying glasses, to make sure I can get them on and off OK.

I've bought a pair with bendy memory metal frames as I could feel my main pair twisting as I pushed the sides into the helmet.

Peripheral vision.... well, I've worn glasses since I was 6 so i don't really notice. In fact, it may be an advantage as I'm used to turning my head rather than relying on peripheral, most of which a helmet cuts out anyway.

No fogging so long as I use an anti-fog wipe every now and then. Breathing out firmly and down past the chin (so out of the bottom of the lid) every now and then seems to help too.

I wear glasses all the time when riding. They're designer black ones, so they look big a stupid under a helmet, but that doesn't matter, as long as i can see

I used to have problems with full face helmets and there visors, like nearly everyone has said, they steam up, even on a hot day at the traffic lights. Now i've got a motocross helmet which goes with my bike, and since there's no visor just goggles, it's a lot better.

The goggles are only over your eyes, so when you breathe, no air from your nose or mouth is going to steam up your glasses or the visor.

It is quite annoying though, as the frame of my glasses digs into my nose and leaves a mark every time i take my helmet off.

I used to wear contacts, never wore them riding, but loved them for everyday use, just useless when they fall out, and they are to expensive for what they are.

Stick with glasses mate, wear thin framed ones, get a cheap pair of basic glasses and ride with your visor up. If it rains and you whip your visor down, it's going to steam up whether you wear glasses or not.

that too is good advice, if like me you had glasses without spring-loaded arms, you risked breaking them squeezing them into a helmet! bad times.

never heard of that spray on stuff, sounds like a good bit of kit...

as for the prescription visor thing, yeh right! sounds a bit out-there to me

I generally wear my contacts while riding and racing however if I'm too lazy I just wear my glasses.

I prefer contacts though, I hate the feeling of the glasses in my helmet and with the glasses on I can't see properly with lifesavers etc.

I wear glasses in my helmet and i find them bloody annoying to be honest. when im riding they are ok, its just everytime i take my helmet off its a pain in the arse. and if your wearing a balaclava it can be annoying.

I havent bothered trying contacts because they are so expensive, £22 a month.. just to be able to see... no thanks .

Im definatley getting laser eye surgery done when I have enough saved up, my dad had it done and it was brilliant, the 1st week was shit because you have to wear these retarded goggle things at night but after that its like having new eyes.

i ride with my glasses sometimes and my visor used to fog up all the time

then i bought a foggy you know the black dust mast thing that sits in your helmet just over your nose
its great even with glasses on it doesnt steam up anymore

my cheapee FM Endor helmet never mists up when I'm wearing glasses.

my posh FM W10 fogs up every time i use it, even when I tried contact lenses. The helmet is too damn tight as well, depsite being the same size as the Endor.

Maybe try a different model / size of helmet if it keeps misting up? worked for me.

Wearing glasses on a bike is inconvienient, but less hassle than having contact lenses in when your eyes dry out.

I wear disposible contacts 6 days a week and try to make sure I don't need to ride on my 'glasses day'.

I hate wearing glasses anyway, but on the bike it's a right pain in the arse.

Peripheral vision sucks, they mist up, you can't ride with visor up in drizzle, and they're awkward to put on.

The handles of mine are now knackered from shoving them past the padding, and now they are wonky and don't sit straight, which means I'm always fiddling to adjust them while riding.

i wear glasses aswell all my life and i started biking at 16.

i just pop them on after i put my helmety on. works a treat for me

i wanted contact lenses so i can wear sun glasses in my helmet lol
