I certainly hope that no-one will abuse their contact facility on their site.

It would be awful if they were spammed by false requests for information, as that would mean they would waste their time answering enquiries from people who have no intention of buying anything from them.

Fingers crossed....eh. Angelic

How strange, on the contact form, under "How did you hear about us", there is not an option for "Forum Spam". Thinking How will they know their most effective advertising campaign got them "customers"?

It is wrong as it breaks the very clear and very prominent forum rules.

I wouldn't walk into your front room telling you about goods and services I provide, so you shouldn't do it here.

No but don't be upset when it is called for what it is.
The correct manner would be to approach forum admin/owners and discuss the possibilities of advertising your service on their forum.

You've made no attempt to introduce yourself beyond a one line ad for your small business and thus have offered nothing to the forum community that you are hoping to gain support from.

thb I'm not sure what you expected to gain with so little effort on your behalf.

Your stay will be minimal if you ever visit again and yet the information you used to log in will be stored as will your poor attempt to advertise your business.
Those of us who are regulars will continue to see the servers struggle just that little bit more as we try and squeeze in 5 minutes of sanity from a work PC .

So forgive us for not jumping with joy or welcoming you with open arms while you attempt to promote your business at zero expense to yourself in both effort and cost.

You haven't offended me, but if we let anyone advertise on the forum, we'll end up having to wade through the adverts for Viagra and porn that we would inevitably be inundated with, before we can actually find anything interesting. The forum is quite full of crap anyway, and adding more to it would make the site unbearable to use. I like this site, lots of my friends are members and I don't want to ruin it just because we let a guy advertise his business on it.

That is another good point Den Monkey, Server bandwidth. I don't want the already slow server being overloaded with business advertising and crap. I hate junk mail, and this amounts to the same thing. In fact, it involves less effort which makes it more reprehensible.

The simple rule is "No unsolicited commercial advertising" and there are no exceptions allowed. Sorry.

You might have gotten away with it had you posted in the 'Exchange and Mart' section, but that is still supposed to be for private adverts.

Make a post in the Show and Tell about some of your epic bead blasting adventures (include lots of pictures). Lots of before and afters of manky old frames turned into shiny swan-like painted beauties, we like those. Then I'll forgive you.

I hope that you never have a TV on in your house then! - Or even this forum has ads popping up at the top of screen!

We are subject to unwanted advertising all over the place (a lot of it even contributed to paying your wages!) but it is up to us to decide what is important to us and what isn't. At least with a TV or a forum post you can decide to turn it off or not read it. I consider the advertising banners at the top of this forum to be much more intrusive but hey, they help to keep the forum running so I just have to accept it! Hey, who knows, one day an ad may pop up for something I need and in which case it will be worth it!

I agree the 'Carole Nash' spam is very bad and misleading. That is wrong but I think in this case, the guy is only trying to run his business and make a salary like the rest of us?

I think you miss the point Rob, you let one in and the floodgates open.

This guy may have been upfront in his intentions, however he already has paid advertising elsewhere.

I agree that when it comes to real misleading SPAM (again I refer to the Carole Nash thread) then steps should be taken to make sure it doesn't happen.

But by allowing legitimate small businesses to advertise their services can only be a good thing for both company and consumer? - I don't agree that if the forum allowed that type of post then that does not mean we would be flooded by misleading spam? That would be treated the same was as this guy was treated surely.

Is this not why we have a rating/ban scheme so the real spammers will be barred reasonably quickly?

If the OP is misleading us and he is a large successful company just trying to cash in on free advertising then yes, I agree he should be treated as spam!

All I'm saying is that we shouldn't be so quick to react to something and call it spam when it may actually be of interest to some people on here?

Lets just call a spade a spade, his post is spam, regardless of whether it is of interest or not.

If this had popped into your email, would you still feel the same?

I know for a fact I will never need a service from ANYONE in Corby, which will apply to the majority of users here.

You may find his service potentially useful, however to the bulk of people here it is and always be labelled spam

I have absolutely no problem with someone advertising their business on a forum, especially when the product is related to the forums specific interest. But this advertising should be paid for.
The administrators of an internet forum do not put their time in just to give someone free advertising.
Its taking the piss.
