I do not watch television (except for Top Gear which is on the BBC) and I use BCF 'Lite Mode' because I have enough karma which minimises the ads to a single small banner at the top of the screen. I couldn't even tell you what is written there because of a thing called a scroll bar which allows you to move down the page to hide said banner.

Seriously, the only time I really look at advertising is ads in the back of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics. I don't read newspapers, I don't watch TV and the only really intrusive thing in my life happens to be the "You wouldn't steal a..." rubbish on the beginning of some DVD's.

I could (if I wanted to) download Firefox and use a plug in which blocks ALL internet advertising. This is probably not necessary though as there is very little advertising on the sites I use on a daily basis.

The thing about forum posts is they are all supposed to be interesting and valid. Some turn out not to be, but I'd rather not compound that by having businesses making even semi legitimate looking posts on the forum.

I am also a member of the RD forum, and that has no safeguards against spam. There is often one or two adverts for viagra near the top of the front page of the forum, and I don't want this forum (which has probably a hundred times the membership) to end up in a similar state.

Huh? I thought that was normal mode? That's all I got anyway. Just switched to light mode and I'm seeing absolutely no ads.

I just looked (for the first time in ages) and there is no banner. Lite mode rules.

You make it sound so sinister! If I was in the market for his services then that post would be interesting and valid? How do you know what people come on this forum for specifically?

I, personally, did not find his post offensive, it was clear in the topic title what it was so actually the first time I didn't even bother reading that thread as I knew I wouldn't be interested. I only looked when he started getting red blobs so thought there must be something interesting going on there!

You missed my point about the ads at the top of the page, yes they are very unintrusive, but his post was even less so.

I completely agree about the type of 'viagra' spam you are talking about and yes, I would also agree it would not be good for that sort of thing to start filling the forum here, and I would expect that it would be treated much as this post has and be slammed as a violation of forum rules.

But, personally, I think people treated this guy a bit unfairly, perhaps you should have moved his post into the 'exchange and mart' forum and perhaps made a comment about it, maybe sent him a PM saying that commercial advertising on the forum is not really accepted in that way but as he was advertising something that 'may' be of interest to some people (or even 1 person) you would allow it in that for sale specific area. It seemed to me like before you even got to really know if it was spam you just jumped in all guns blazing to get him out? - That is the right action for genuine spam (multi nationals or medic stuff etc etc) but surely not right for this 'particular' occasion?

And as for Kwaker6r's comment, you may not be interested in his services but some people may? It's not a forum just for you! - I'm not interested either but one day there may be something I (or you) may be interested in?

Fine perhaps, but A) I am not a moderator, and B) its a slippery slope. If we let guys in sheds advertise on the forum (which is my preferred business type) then soon big dealers etc will be using the forum to advertise, and then the whole thing will snowball. Especially as Korn has made the forum so Google friendly.

It would have taken more effort perhaps, but it would have been much more effective to have gotten an existing happy customer to write a post on here about what they had done etc. After all, this is a discussion forum, not an advertising board.

Rob, I know what you're saying, but Ads part of the webpage are a completely different thing. They are paying to have their ads there, putting revenue into the site. I imagine BCF server costs are pretty expensive.

Just signing up to post an ad is effectively free advertising putting nothing into the site.

If you really want something out of the site (like the business of it's members) then you should be willing to put something in. Restore the balance and all that Karma

Otherwise it would just be take take take and the site would be an empty shit hole.

Rob, your whole argument seems to be that because someone may find his service useful then he shoulf be able to advertise.

Pretty sure there are some on here who would find viagra ads useful so......


This guy may be a small business, however as I said he pays to advertise elsewhere, why should he get it free here?

Eh, there really is no difference, he is posting advertising for his business unsolicitated, ergo it is spam.
