not sure if i should post this here or in the workshop.... Laughing
but here goes..

my current project a '68 honda z50m

https://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt180/DaveJPS/090809015.jpg?t=1249842866

https://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt180/DaveJPS/090809021.jpg?t=1249842889

that i aim to restore (i was going to last year but the garage i got it mot'd at stole the handbook Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad but they've gone bust now, and so have their sister garage Twisted Evil )

anyway a bit of background my father bought it to go to work on late seventies and nothing has been really done to it since, but it's a cub engine so it can take it. also this is the really unsafe model that lasted only 2 years as it has no suspension and the uk model had no brake light (have fitted one off a french model)

so onto the plan:
strip it down
repaint the frame and mudguards (and replace the rear one
repaint the engine
HT paint the exhaust
put it back together
get it officially back on the road (bloody dvla)
ride the arse off it (possibly fit a bigger barrel to it but atm the gearchange is so lumpy it popped the front wheel tonight in the carpark Laughing )

oh and throttle now you're running monkey run if you set up a for sale section i want first refusal on z50m parts Wink

the only thing on it i ken is really desirable about it is the original seat (have seen them sell for £200-300)

going to do it up and use it, i've got a personal hatred of "show" bikes

so what is the best way to remove rust/strip the paint off the metal parts? wire brush? or sonicator?

I also hate show bikes. People are starting to collect C70's. That's why I ride mine like this.

Nitromors? I've never used it but the results that people post up on here seem to suggest that it's good stuff.

What a gorgeous little bike!

I am green with envy!

This project will be the dogs balls! You better keep up with it!

If you need any help, the guys on the MonkeyRun forum will no doubt be very happy to help!

With regards to a for sale section, there is a section currently set up called "Monkey Sales" although z50M parts don't come up often. I'll give you a shout if they do Wink

Are you going to take it to any runs?

I too agree,

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/chris-red/145.jpg

Looks nearly show to most people but the the pedant will pick 100s of wrong bits there are a fair few Suzuki parts on it Laughing It's built to be ridden.

Cheers ms51ves3, i'll get some of that.

Throttle i may take it to some runs, but with a top speed of 30mph it might take me a while to get anywhere near it Laughing

Chris-red tis a nice triumph, how many miles have you put on in this last year (i've hacked about 1.5K miles on the dommie this last year)

although i'd like to point out this isn't going to be a ariel1930 rebuild
Laughing (unfortunately the combination of a job and a GF hampers my shed time Wink )

There are runs for slower bikes, but they are few a far between these days!

I am guessing, I get a go on this? Right? Wink

the lack of a car license somewhat hampers me, (but i'm going to retry this winter), sure you can have a go when i get it fixed and sorted with the dvla (and gotten a proper numberplate for it).

Ha, I've only put about 150 miles on it, but to be fair it has only been working since June and has been a little tempramental, fine now though. It is my Dads and he has put probably about 500 miles on it.

That is actually Epic!
Mate of mine has just finished getting his Z50 on the road. He's got a newer model, It's more of an Off Road Money bike.

https://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj88/mysterious_rider/100_4401.jpg

And I am currently in the process of getting my CRF50 replica to a state where it can be put on the road.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/binge/Photo0678.jpg

I'm guessing you've got a 3 speed semi Auto box in that?
Little nippers arent they. Just be careful on gear changes, The gear selector has an internal arm which completely dis-engages the clutch to aid a smooth gear change.
If you have the revs up enough to engage the centrifugal clutch, as you let your foot off the gear selector it will be like dumping the clutch. You'll end up on your arse.

So make sure the throttle is closed when you let your foot back off the gear selector for the next gear. Laughing

I'll be keeping an eye on this project!

yeap it's the 3 speed (1 up 2down), it's not been helped by the fact i think the clutch is buggered, (plates have never been changed) and teh lack of rear suspension which means no bounce to take up the slack Laughing

work is going to be slowed until i can get my hands on a 10mm socket that will fit the extended bar, so i can get the exhaust off.
edit: and some masking tape so i can label the loom as i take it further to pieces

These are now obsolete but we have two pairs left in stock at £250 a
pair. (front and rear)

Shocked £250 pounds!

Is that a Honda engine he has put into that chinese frame??

CRF looks really nice. I have eyed them up before but they are too much for my limited budget. I really want a Monkey, I hate you guy's posting these images. Makes me feel poor and jealous.

Dave,
I always thought MonkeyBike UK was overpriced and expensive to be fair, but in all honesty they do have a good selection and are highly rated.

I guess you could always watch Egay but I think you will be waiting a long time. Plastic weld sounds like the best option, especially if you don't want it to be a "show bike" and intend on riding it like a real man Laughing

Something may come up in the future but in all honesty most people won't notice it and will think your awesome for owning a Z50M anyway.

wikipedia wrote:
The Z50M was the first Z50 Series mini bike for sale produced by Honda Motorcycles. It was released in 1967 to the European, Japanese and Canadian markets, becoming one of Honda's first practical mini bikes. Although the Z50M was theoretically road worthy, it did not have various safety components and was therefore mostly just used just for fun off road. Though these bikes are not extinct today, these mini bikes are some of the least common of the Z50 series left running.

Laughing Laughing

no work tonight as i'm off to the Yorkshire NOC meeting
