hi all,
i'm 17 and have been looking at bikes for about 2 years,
i didn't want to go for a ped, purely because of the noise they make (petty but meh Very Happy)

basically, i'm looking for some clearance on the licensing procedure, and some recomendations on my first bike,

when i have done my CBT, this enables me to ride any bike under 125 cc with L plates, with alot of restrictions, then when i have done my A1, i can remove the L plate and lose those restrictions?
is this correct?
am i also right in thinking that after the A1 you are still stuck with a bike 125cc and below?
After passing my A1, how long am i stuck with that, until i can then do the next test, is it 2 years, OR is it until i'm 21? whichever comes first?

and then onto bike choice Wink
i'm quite a tall lad, 6,2 and am a little bit curious as to whether this will be an issue with some bikes, obviously it will but, as i'm looking at a specific bike, could i be offered some guidance?
the bike i'm looking at; Yamaha XT125X

sorry for all the questions, just am trying to clear all the loose ends etc before i start, so figured asking some of the people more passionate about the topic than myself is a good start

thanks alot in advance!

i would do the a2 test mate because if you do the a1 you are restricted to a 125 which aint good lol. and if you do the a2 test you can ride any bike up to 33bhp for 2 years then when that period is over you can ride what ever you like Very Happy .

At 17 not able to do a direct access test so the only way you can go is the normal test. A restricted licence is better than no licence. The restrictions will be up by the time your 19 and that 2 years before you would be eligable to do the DAS.

A2 is the licence you want ( also known as Standard bike, <33bhp and 'restricted licence'), please disregard the A1 altogether.

I hate the A1, it's pointless (unless you are like 70 years old and will only ever need a C90 for popping to the bingo) and adds extra confusion to the already confusing licence procedures.

Anyway, bikewise, do a search as I think theres been a few threads with recommendations for taller riders. Enduro types tend to give more leg room, also the Honda City Fly (CLR125) is apparently quite tall. Best way is to try to sit on a few different bikes if you can.

Also have a read through https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=33113 full of useful info - just skim over the odd bit of drivel and concentrate the posts marked with green dots for the best info.

Thumbs Up

Arrow do your CBT on the provided 125,
Arrow then you can buy your own 125 if you want,
Arrow then do your theory test,
Arrow then A2 test,
Arrow then if you want you can buy any bike and then have it restricted to 33bhp.

I did the CBT, bought a 50, broke the 50, bought a 125, did the theory, had some lessons, did the A2, bought a restricted 600, de-restricted it. job done Thumbs Up Very Happy
