I use the good old iPhone headphones, however when I'm riding I have an intercom in my helmet that I plug my iPhone into, easier + more comfortable.

While riding, anything from dance/trance to Spanish pop. No death metal though, tends to make me reckless. Laughing.

Also, this could probably go in the 'Random Banter' section..

Why would you need headphones when you are driving? The car should have a decent set of speakers in it.

If you mean riding, I prefer to listen to the sound of the engine, nowt finer!

I use sony in ear bud thingys - they are good because they reduce the sound from wind etc whilst allowing the music to be heard on a low volume. This means I still have awareness of whats going on around me

Personally I like the ability to hear without a constant high pitched whine, so I wear earplugs on the bike.

Sennheiser CX500 Thumbs Up

I quite often listen to music while riding, but not too loud, so I can still hear what's going on around me. That's why I like these headphones as they kind of block the wind noise, so you don't have to turn the volume to the max to hear something. Had a few other Sennheisers already and can't recommend them enough.

Sensorcom Microbuds, pn: SC1921BK - have bass attenuation plugs that go in the shell to limit the amount of bottom end they produce... and used with right size silicon tips cut out all the nastiness from engine and wind noise. Nice long cable to reach my tank bag (down the front of my jacket and up the tank) which is very sturdy... and most ear-techs will make a set of moulded earplugs to accept them as they're used a lot in live music as in-ear-monitors. And they're quite cheap too... and they've got a damn small profile so stay in yer ear and tend not to snag on your lid as you're pulling it on etc.

I was thinking about some of those too, mainly for a gps rather than music. I came across this link that you might find handy:

https://www.motorcycleanchor.com/motorcycle/how_to/helmetradios.html

and some ideas for making your own bluetooth helmet:

https://www.walyou.com/blog/2009/05/10/bluetooth-motorcycle-helmet-diy/

You can buy bike specific ones but from what I can gather unless you get good ones (which are more expensive), then they're not much use at speed. Though some regular consumer headphones for music can be cut up and wired in and do a good job for less money it seems if you buy the right ones. Haven't got around to trying it myself yet.

On a related note I've been looking at the parrot SK4000 system, looks like a good little bluetooth / music kit for about £100. Means I can leave my iphone in my pocket, the parrot has A2DP built in so you can stream and control your music over the bluetooth too.

You can also plug in your mp3 player or listen to the radio, and there is a controller for your bars so you can skip tracks and fiddle with the volume. I'll be picking one up in the next few weeks and i'll post a review.

If the engine noise is already ear splitting you are going to struggle to hear music over it without cranking up the volume. Combine this output with wind noise which is already around 90dB at the national speed limit and you will place yourself at serious risk of permanent hearing damage.

If you have a race can on I would suggest replacing it with a standard can to at least allow a lower volume to be used through the speakers.

As above get in-ear ear buds - I know some people swear by the external noise canceling type but they are not cheap.

At the bottom of that first link I posted he talks about hearing loss and suggests using in-helmet speakers in conjunction with noise reducing ear plugs.

I'm not sure how well that'd actually work, but I figured it might be a bit easier on the ears if it does work than the in-ear type.
