I know this should really be in the new section but this is to prove a point to a couple of people at work.

Scooter 50cc on a car licence.

If I am correct this is not allowed under no circumstances regardless of how long you have had you car licence.

You must have a CBT.

Please advise

As far as I know you cannot ride a scooter, or any type of vehicle like that on a car licence. I think a good few years ago you could ride a bike on a car licence up to 250cc, I think? Then the government changed the laws as a lot of people would just hop on a bike without any basic training, so that's where the CBT came in........

I passed my car driving licence in 1998. So technically I could have bought a 50cc bike just now without having to do a CBT??

Not that I'm bothered because I'm glad I did it and I love my 125, but I thought everyone had to do a CBT nowadays.

cant ride any motorised two wheels on the road without passing a CBT....makes sense really

and ignoring the law side of it, its highly unadvisable anyway, a CBT costs 100 quid including bike hire for the day, is normally good fun, and opens your eyes to the basic differences between riding a car and bike on the road

Hi

Passing your test prior to a certain date your full car licence was a full moped licence so no need for CBT, etc. However I think that was around 1990.

Think we need TC to give us the full details on this.

By the way, until CBT came in around a decade ago you could legally buy a 125 and ride it from the dealers with no training. Go back 20 years and you could do the same with a 250.

Yeah, I remember my dad telling me about his 125 scooter he had back in the '60's.

Just to throw another question in and to add to the confusion, does that mean that even this many years later he could legally ride a 125 (since his licence will be the same as it was in the '60's) or would he have to start from scratch and do a CBT?

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, it's just all so confusing and I think with a little work I could convince him to get a bike (but not a scooter, bless him!)

Depends on the licence he had then. If he had a full licence then he would be OK now (although the DVLA had a bad habit of loosing peoples motorcycle entitlements from their licences in the mid 1980s when they moved how), but if he was a learner then he would need to do CBT, etc.
