Anybody help me out?

They're on-road ones, but does it really matter if you're wearing off-road ones? I have a pair of A* SMX air carbon gloves (the old ones), and no-one's called me a prat for wearing them: if anything I get asked where I got them from.

Off-road gloves are usually quite nice for hot weather, in my experience - they're lighter than normal road gloves, and they still offer some protection, so there's no major reason to avoid them.

what's the difference?,

gloves is gloves. if you like them & they're comfy they're whatever you want them to be

I've got loads of pairs of gloves some lined, some unlined, some with support studs & bits of kevlar, others are just plain leather, are they on or off road gloves? no they're just gloves

if someone's telling you you've got the wrong gloves then it's their hang up not yours

If you wear it off road, it is off road.
If you wear it on public roads, it is on road.
It doesnt matter what you wear. Getting there in one piece matters.

Off road are usually made of cloth rather than leather, but as other people say it doesn't flipping matter.

Use an off-road glove on road and slide down the road and you'll find it very much does matter.
The other way around, you'll just get a bit hot.

Having done that years ago. It made no diffrence.

The layers of leather did their job well enough that only a few scrapes were there and they were good for another 5 years use.

Erm, I'm guessing your off-road gloves aren't quite the same as modern ones Confused - which tend to be a mesh with single bits of leather for minor impact protection (flying stones etc).

G, since when did you become a safety facist?

I figured that the fella understood the difference between woven cloth and hide in terms of abrasion resistance, but he was talking in terms of looks.

I also believe that Joe Rocket and various others sell mesh cloth 'road' gloves.

Mine have got leather palms on them, as well as a fair bit of rubber and carbon fibre on the back of the hand. They definitely feel more substantial than my Hein Gericke summer gloves, which bear an alarming resemblance to the cloves that you seem to be describing, G.

Of course, we should all bear in mind that as a child, I had an alarming propensity toward using my face to break my fall, as opposed to my hands, which is probably why I'm not so concerned about the strength of my gloves Wink

Erm, you may have missed a recent post of mine Wink.

However, my usual point is that, as with anything in life, it's fine if you understand and accept the risks.

Someone that's worrying they might look a prat in off-road gloves even though they don't know what off-road gloves look like, is, to my mind, very unlikely to understand the risks.

I've never seen mesh road gloves, but if they do exist; I would expect they are made with abrasion resistant mesh, as opposed to what isn't too far off a pair of strong tights.

Well, here's the HG gloves:
https://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/shop/images/prodpics/HGAIRGLOVES3.jpg

And the A* ones:
https://www.motocross-clothing.co.uk/acatalog/gl_alp_smxaircarb_2.jpg

The Alpinestars ones are a bit thinner, but much better protected, in my opinion. No mesh in sight on them, either...

I think I know the kind of gloves that you're on about, though, and I do honestly reckon that anyone that wears a pair of gloves built like that on a motorbike and expects them to actually protect their hands is a bit of a muppet. These gloves are not, however, like those...

(Joe Rocket summer gloves)

Crashed in them twice, I've still got my full compliment of skin (still got the gloves too).

Carbon bit was good though, took a fair chunk out of it so probably best that it was there.
