Hi.

I cannot get my oil filter off.

I have a ZZR 600, and I have detached the oil cooler from the frame to get better access, although the downpipes are kinda in the way.

I have tried using a chain filter wrench and all it did was bend the filter.

Also, I don't think

Any ideas before I attack it with a junior hack saw?

Also, I don't think that it has the octagonal style tip on it so I don't think the other type of wrench would work.

Thanks.

I often land up hammering an old screwdriver right through the body of the filter and unscrewing it that way.

When you fit the new one, oil the o-ring and screw it on finger tight. It should undo by hand the next time.

I was considering this, but I am worried about bending or damaging the threaded part that holds the filter on.

Do you have any tips on how to prevent damage to the threaded stem?

Thanks.

Sounds like the last person to change it overtightened it.

One of these is this proper tool, as it won't slip:

I think your ZZR takes the 65mm. Check size beforehand, just in case.

I always used to use the 'hammer a screwdriver through and twist' method, always worked fine if a bit messy, also remember you've got splayed out metal when you grip it with your hand to remove it, sliced my thumb nicely once in an absent minded moment. I had a really really stiff filter once and the screwdriver snapped off, I ended up hammering the swingarm pivot bolt from a VFR400 through the initial hole for some serious leverage, came off easy.

When you do it make sure it's well towards the far end of the filter so you don't risk hammering into the thread from the engine which can go upto just under halfway into the filter.

I personally use one of these now, a rubber strap wrench, make sure the filter is clean and dry and a big one should work. The longer a filter is left on the harder it is to get off, spray a bit of wd40 or something around the base of the filter too to penetrate the seal. Put the new one on by hand, I never use a tool to tighten them.

alright, I hammered a screwdriver all the way through the end of the filter. It is still not coming off.

What is happening is that when I am putting pressure on it, the metal is just ripping.

Any ideas?

EDIT: my mechanic friend says he is going to lend me some big plier things on Monday.

He said the name of them when I spoke to him on the phone, but I didn't get the name.

He says you use them to grab the stronger piece of metal at the edge of the filter and twist it off. He also says ill probably need to drop my downpipes to get it off.

Bugger.

Ah well, I'll let you know how I get on.

He possibly meant stilsons, but they will not spread the load as well as something all the way through the filter meaning it's more likely to just twist the metal casing off. I'd just suggest getting something nice and long and a bit thicker to hammer through the hole you made, like a 10" plus socket extender bar (something longer and thicker than the screwdriver), bigger it is the less likely it is to tear the metal and the leverage is what you need.

I'm going to go out and take the rear axle off my CG and batter that into it to see if I can get it off with that.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks.

EDIT:

No luck. I am getting angry because I can't ride my bike. I think I should just leave it now and get help from my friend.

Thanks guys. Thumbs Up
