PostPosted: 11:30 - 15 Aug 2009    Post subject: My mate needs some help with his bike, anyone? Reply with quote

My mate has a Suzuki GP 125, an 82 model, so it's really old but looking at it, it's in mint condition for its age.

He has a slight problem which probably occurs on any bike, so hopefully someone will be able to help.

His fuel tap used to leak, and his bike used to die out every time when starting it up. He held in the clutch and slipped it into 1st, and it just died out, all the time.

He now has a new fuel tap fitted, and the problem seemed to have gone away, but now there's no leakage of fuel from the tap, and the engine still dies out on odd occasions.

He warms it up, uses the choke when needed to, and when he knocks it into first... same again, dies out Confused

Any help would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up

Cheers

Sounds electrical to me.

My advice would be to strip the electrical connections, clean them with some wet and dry paper and water to remove rust. dry them and put them back together.

most likely problem is the sidestand switch if it has one.

PS this should be in the workshop section Wink

Cheers Dale Thumbs Up

My mate has just checked over, and his spark plug is all black? Confused Which doesn't make much sense as he only bought it like a week ago brand new....

Anyhow, he's actually replaced it with another new one and now it seems to be working fine, ticks over nicely, idling speed is all good and when you slip into first it doesn't die out Very Happy

If any problems persist though, i'll make sure he gets his electrics checked over Thumbs Up

Thanks for the help mate, surprising that it was the spark plug, last thing we thought of due to it being new.... Do you have any idea why it was black?

I'm taking it that i should clean the carb, but i'm not an expert on bikes, neither is my mate. So has the GP got only 1 cylinder?

If so, what do you mean by balancing? My mates dad will do it all, as he suggested cleaning the carb at some point, i don't think it's ever been cleaned once in its whole 27 years of existence, so it could do with a massive carb clean Thumbs Up

Cheers guys Very Happy

Its a single cylinder bike so will have one carb, just whip the float bowl off the part at the bottom after draining using the lowest drain screw, then using carb cleaner clean the parts inside, making sure all jets etc are clean, a squirt of compressed air also helps alot.

You cannot balance 1 cylinder as there is nothing to balance it against..

It maybe won't be electrical if it starts and runs until he put's it in first, it seem's more likely to be clutch/gear related.

check he is using decent 2 stroke and not the £1 cheapas lawnmower stuff

Used some cheap £1 stuff in my dt years back and it killed every plug within a few miles... took a fair few plugs till i found the problem.

may also be a faulty sidestand switch if it only dies when knocked into first

I had the exact same problem, turned out to be the sidestand failsafe thingy. I simply cut the wires, twisted them together, drowned them in electrical tape and hid them behind the battery Twisted Evil
