Ive had my heart set on a ZX10 or CBR1000RR but ive just come across a GSXR 1000 K8, with 400 miles on the clock that has been accident damaged but repaired.

Its got arrow cans on it and its up for £5995, which is obviously very cheap for what it is!

I was just wondering what are peoples views on buying accident damaged bikes?

Thanks, Sam

How well has it been repaired and what was the original damage? If its only plastic damage then I wouldnt worry. If it was written off damage then I would be sceptical to pay out 6k on a bike with poor history. I would want to know that its been jigged and assessed for bends, frame damage, alignment etc etc. Otherwise your buying a wonky frame with a stonking engine.

It all depends on how happy you are, how long you want to keep it and how much of a knock you want to take when you try and shift it.

Thumbs Up

Depends on the nature of the accident.

I bought a written-off nearly new GSXR600 back from the insurance company for a couple of hundred quid. It was a cosmetic writeoff (a few scratches on the frame mean't it would have cost 3K for a new frame alone..)

The fact that I wrote it off in the first place was helped Laughing

Still managed 50K miles on it.

But that was seriously cheap!

400 miles... obviously scared himself silly and now (the wife) wants shot of it.

But 6K is a lot if its a lemon.

I bought the ZX7R as a cat C.

It had been repaired with all reciepts and insurance forms to match.

It made no difference to my insurance premium and I got a bike at a nice little ££.

I bought my CBR for £600 as it had been trashed by the previous owner and was a non-runner.

£100 of new parts later and it was up and running.

It was only cosmetic damage though, and in all fairness I think I was quite lucky that there wasn't anything seriously wrong with it.

Ive not seen the bike yet, and ive not spoke to the garage where it is. Im going to go and have a look at tomorrow hopefully, if its a bad write off then I wont buy it. If its things like a scratched frame, fairing and handlebar damage then ill see if I can get some money off it.

Might see if they can do it for £5k if its ok, because I know it will be hard to sell on.

That sounds like a company that does this all the time, so i would not expect to get it much cheaper than the asking price.
If a garage has put it back on the road, then it will have to be roadworthy. Unlike something you may buy from Joe Blogs down the street.

Rang them up, the bike is a CAT C and has had quite a bit of damage. Damage to frame, bars, all fairings, sounds like alot, and personally I wouldn't pay £6k for a CAT C bike with frame work, I offered them £4k but they weren't interested. I think im just going to stump the cash and go for a CBR1000RR.
