I think i purchased my second Ninja back in early part 2008 or late 2007. Since owner ship it hasn't had tax, i never had a reminder and i just carried on my merry way biking.
I've got insurance, MOT, etc....but no tax.
Saturday I was out on a ride out with the lady yesterday when we stopped at a junction to chat about directions. Over the road is a merc estate police car, the chap in the seat is looking at me, i instantly thought that he wants a check on my bike, so i started the bike and played with the fuel tap for a second hoping he'd go away.
Unfortunatly he rolled over and went behind me, i rode away to the roundabout then stopped again as i was on the road where our friend lives now but unsure of the number.

The cop car pulls up...shit...the first thing he says it that a quick check shows no tax...through the whole time he was cocky, mocking and rude. Im not going to complain, ive got no tax, so i take it. To cut a long story short the cop tells me, im about to pay a £1000 fine for this and get a producer. Basically how ever long ive had the bike X 10 the annual tax amount, plus the fine....which he says will be about a grand. Nice.
So is this true?
I did think, what if i tax it today, think they'll have a job sorting that out?

Never had tax on the cbr, got stung the other week, £175 for back tax, and ordered to tax/sorn it or they would prosecute. As far as I know its a civil matter so plod arn't the ones your in trouble with, it'l be the tax people. Tax it asap and hope for the best.

face it - the government are have bankrupted us all & are desperate for cash.

plus massive tax rises in 2010.

if you get fined a grand, thats ridiculous.

i was watching UK customs programme the other day, guy came across on the ferry in a lorry with 900kilos of weed. 900 kilos!!!
he didnt get charged with anything, due to "lack of evidence" that was there exact words.

it will be ages before they get round to dealing with it anyway, i got done for no insurance driving a mates bike in a car park. was 8 months before they even came to my house to fill the forms out, id completely forgot about it.

i got done for not taxing a CBR 400 once, i sold it to a dealer and they said they would send off the log book on my behalf and they didn't and the tax ran out.

i got letter through the door saying i had to pay £80 with i thing was reduced to £40 if you paid in so many days(30 i think).

that came through a month or so after the tax ran out and the garage i sold it to paid the fine and sorted it out for me.

when did it actually run out?

you may be luck and just have to tax it, pay the £80 fine and buy some back tax so depending when it ran out it might cost you about 300ish.

What will happen
If you don’t tax or SORN your vehicle you could be stopped by the police.

You’ll get an automatic penalty of £80, as well as paying for a new tax disc and any arrears of vehicle tax you owe.

You could also get a County Court Judgement against you, and be fined a minimum of £1000.

The maximum penalty for making a false declaration by declaring SORN when the vehicle is actually used or kept on a public road is £5000 and two years imprisonment.

Your vehicle could be clamped by one of DVLA's wheelclamping partners. You’ll need to pay to have your vehicle released as well as producing a valid tax disc or a surety fee if no disc is available. If you fail to pay, your vehicle will be impounded, incurring storage charges. If you don’t pay the release or storage fees, your vehicle could be crushed or sold

Am i right saying you need insurance certificate, V5 and MOT to tax your vehicle?

Lets say I had a friend who was riding around with MOT and insurance but no tax. What's the usual punishment and what's the theoretical maximum?

I'd always assumed that the most they could fine you was £80 + you had to pay back-dated tax? The £1000 fine only comes in to play if you've made a false statement such as a SORN and then you're caught riding around.

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

*Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
*insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
*valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
*the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

£1k is the maximum fine.

for that to happen it'd have to go to court, which it won't. police will inform dvla, who'll send you a letter demanding something along the lines of £60

all the police do is report it to DVLA, its civil case, not a criminal case. The only way you wil get a CCJ is if you dont pay, or keep up with an arrangement to pay any owed debts.

Fine is £80, + tax arrears, so 20months ish x £66 = £1320

So your looking at around £1400 i'm afraid

However, if you have never recieved the V5, there may be a chance that the fine will goto the previous owner, especially since you have never seen any warning letters previously.
