Hi all.

I just recently brought a pg 306 and am having some issues with the car. There seems to be no power from it. The car as only done 85k and seems to be good conditon and engine seems clean.

The car dose not seem to rev past 4k and It will not go faster than 80mph.

What can be causeing this?

I have removed the air filter and it is clean and I have put my hand over the air intake and it dose seem to be sucking in air on tickover.

Please help.

A lack of power could be virtually anything, but the first thing I'd check is the turbo. Could just be the turbo pipe has come off, or the actuator is knackered, or the seals/bearings have gone (in which case you'll have blue smoke from the exhaust)

ECU light on? Failed sensors can cause a power restriction on Peugeots.

Check the pipe from the turbo too for splits. This causes the engine to loose power and smoke thick black clouds.

Way to test turbo, as long as the timing belt is not in need of replacement:

With engine warmed up, get someone to floor the throttle with the car in neutral for a few seconds. Look at the exhaust, keeping an eye on the smoke, especially as your assistant releases the throttle.

You are looking for blue smoke (I think) which is oil from the bearings in the turbo.

Blue smoke on startup when cold is unburnt diesel.

The black smoke when booted is normal and comes from the buildup of soot in the exhaust. Normal driving doesn't get rid of it and it builds up for when you boot it. Should disappear after a short while.

Constant Black smoke which doesn't disappear when booted is overfuelling. Usually the turbo pipe that's split.

Blue smoke when booted or on deceleration is oil. Usually the turbo.

Grey/white clouds of smoke that looks like a fog is chasing you, is the head gasket.

IT smokes only when started, and thats only for a minute or so. I think the GP need replacing as it runs lumpy for the 1st minute. When driving normally it dosent smoke at all.

If I keep the revs between 2-3k it accerates ok. just not pull from low revs and wont pass 80.

Ill check the turbo shortly. I think I might email the bloke I got it from as it got a few issues I wasnt aware off and he would have known about.

And seeing as his dad is a "trader" I think I might get some money back.

If the car starts, the glo-plugs are fine, they do feck all once the car is running, it's only when the car won't start that the plugs need looking at.

It does sound to me as if the turbo is not spooling up properly, take the advice above. If the turbo is OK, then I would start looking at valves/cams, the usual culprit after the turbo.

Cheers

I just had the same with my 306. it would rev fine just no power and it ended up being the air flow sensor..although it didnt throw up an ecu light for some time...I went through the is it the turbo..is it the particle filter bla bla bla route.....turned out to be that. when the light did finally come on it then went into liomp you home mode and would not rev much past 2K rpm. OK mine is an early hdi model but worth a try. part was £95 from pug direct!!!!!

My money is on the airflow meter/sensor or the turbo, i had a golf gt tdi do exactly the same, obviously the airflow is cheaper than the turbo.

In all seriousness stu, call 017823 392202 and speak to george or steve and they can fix you up with either the airflow meter/sensor or a turbo new with 12 month warranty, they are garrett certified engineers and all there turbos are top quality.

Right well if its the non HDI dturbo (which it will be if its a 1.9) then it is not a problem with the ECU or airflow sensors or whatever, simply because its has none.

Its a mechanical injection, probably a lucas pump. There is a pipe from the middle of the intercooler which connects to the fuel pump. If this is disconnected your pump wont be sensing any boost and will cause a lack of power.

The turbo kicks in around 2k so you should see a significant boost in power there. If you open the window and labour the engine a bit (like drive up a curb slowly) you will hear the turbo spinning up, although it will do this even if its shagged.

Also headgaskets are a common failure but unlikely to cause this issue.

Glowplugs will not cause this as they are only for starting. If you have trouble starting just try double glowplugging it (key on and off twice), also note the glow plugs are still heating for a few seconds after the light goes out, so its worth waiting 2-3s.

Aswell as the turbo pipes people mentioned above, there is a D shaped seal where the intercooler connects to the manifold, check this for leaks as it could be damaged.

Edit: Oh yeah one more thing, if the person before you has tuned it (very common as its easy) and then detuned it too much it will cause this. I did this to mine when taking it for an MOT and it was slow as fuck.
