My bike broke down today (typically about 40 miles before its due to go in for servicing!), basically what happened was the cable attached to the clutch lever snapped off at the clutch lever meaning I couldn't change gear! For about 15-20 minutes before it snapped the gear 'lever' was very difficult to use, ie it needed a real good boot to change gear, obviously going from 1st to 2nd became very hard to do! Luckily I was able to get the RAC out and he was able to repair the snapped end of the cable at the clutch lever so I could get home but he reckoned that there's possibly something wrong inside the gear box. What do you guys reckon the problem could be? I'm going to take it in to the dealer/garage tommorow, mainly for the service but I'll get them to take a look at the gearbox aswell. In the meantime I was wondering what you guys think the problem might have been? Cheers! ____________________ CBT passed 20th June 2009

You don't need the clutch to change gear. Is there any untoward rattling coming from the engine/box?
If not, you should only need to change the cable. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Knackered clutch cable.......
Reason it was so hard could have been due to the cable not disengaging the clutch fully.
You can ride a bike without using the clutch
Start in gear on the starter and stop with the kill switch. Changing gear is a matter of timing. ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

| Quote: | Is this shortshifting?? |
No. Shortshifting is shifting at a relatively low engine speed, which can have various advantages at certain times.
There are quite a few threads on here about shifting without using the clutch. It's perfectly fine to change upwards through 'box without the clutch, but some say that downshifts should always be done with the clutch. Personally, clutchless downshifts are fine by me. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
