Hi,

Bought myself a GS500E as a stepping stone to a larger bike.
Was a blast on the way home from where i picked it up!
Today i took it out and it was very sluggish, warmed it up quite nicely, but you open the throttle its does a nice gadual increase then bogs down then, then up then down again.

Carbs have been balanced, thinking it may be spark plugs/air filter..
if anyone could point me the way, im going to fix it tomorrow!!

Its a 1993, no bhp restriction, fresh fuel, motad nexxus exhaust.
12,000 miles.

Cheers guys

hey guys
i bought new plugs..ones i had seemed to be slightly red and black in colour!?!?!?
the problem still happens, air filter is clear and clean, plugs are fresh.
Problem was i think my battery is gone, as ive been riding it for a bout 2 hours. and i went to restart it at home and it was just slow to turn over then clicl click click..so previous bike battery being charged to see if its the recharging system in the bike up the shoot.
Could that have caused the crap performance?

Fuel filter, where would i locate this?

Also FYI running it on prime didnt sort it, so i think thats the vacuum ok.

Will probably strip the carbs next weekend, using the car during the week anyway!

Erm..it was balanced at a shop, about 30miles before its latest MOT, which has 11 months remaining.

Will run these sparks for a few hours and pull em, see what colour they are... thing is i didnt notice this when i picked the bike up, only happened since it was run 30-40 miles.

Will check tank when petrol is low and check for rust and crap.

Seemed to happen about 7000-8000 rpm when i was really pushing it to see if it would clear the crap.

Cheers for the help so far

If the battery is knackered the ignition wont work very well-the ignition runs directly from the barrel.

If you have a fuel filter fitted, trace the fuel line from the bottom of the fuel tank to the carbs, it will be inline somewhere.

red and black plug suggests richness but if the ignition isnt performing properly then you can get odd spark plug colours.

Hi

Carbs are a common problem on these if they've been left for any length of time. Mine got left for about a year, and I had real problems for ages with lack of power. Strip down and clean, and it's back into it's wheelie popping goodness. Thumbs Up Wink

Try running it on prime, the fuel taps on the GS are known for being shit.

Are you sure the exhaust is not blowing at all?. On mine when the exhaust (also a Nexxus) was on its way out you would open the throttle, it would accelerate, bog, then just as you were rolling off approaching neutral throttle it would give you a little squirt of power and then bog again...

If not exhuast related i can only suggest to use some Redex petrol additive in the tank...

If it is blowing it would likely be at the collector (mid point where downpipe goes into 1 before it joins link pipe/can), or in my case the actual downpipe snapped off near the lip.

alright then, i will look when im home!
im just a bit wary with the clutch aswell..
if i warm it up, it revs itself to 3k rpm.. i just slip in 1st and get to biting point to lower the revs..
although this is a different problem..can you help with this?
possibly choke cable? clutch cable?

if i adjust the idle screw...it goes down to about 1500, but when i rev..it does it again!?!?!?!

check the cable run but its starting to sound like toy have an air leak somewhere. Check the balancing adaptors arent missing and that the carbs are properly clamped down.
