In March last year I applied online for a current account with Natwest. They opened two accounts for me, although I only opened one. Not only that, but when I got the first statement both accounts were ~£100 overdrawn, despite the fact I hadn't paid a penny in or taken any out.
I went to my local branch and they told me that I had asked for mobile phone insurance on both accounts for about £4 a month when I applied online. I didn't. I know I didn't as I have mobile phone insurance with Vodafone, and I hardly need another policy, never mind two more! I also never received any documentation for mobile phone insurance. The clerk said there was nothing that could be done in branch and gave me a phone number to call for their internet banking dept, who fobbed me off.
I ignored all subsequent statements that were piling up banking charges, and it was eventually passed onto a collection agency. They pestered for a while, which was ignored until they said they would make doorstop call if they hadn't heard from me in 7 days. At this point I called the collection agency to explain the situation and to tell them that I will be making no payments towards the account. I advised them that if they thought I was liable for the charges then they should begin court proceedings against me, to which the reply was something like "You do realise that if we take you to court it's up to you to prove that you don't owe us the money". I advised him to go back to law college.
The last correspondence was a few months ago now, and suprise suprise I haven't heard anything more from either Natwest or the collection agency. So, I checked my credit history on Credit Expert, and there are two entries in red by Natwest.
I called Credit Expert who said that I either have to call Natwest to ask them to remove them (which I'd imagine is highly unlikely), or call the Financial Ombudsman, which I did. They have asked for the account numbers for the accounts in question which I didn't have to hand, and that they would speak to Natwest for me.
My question is, are Natwest likely to take the matter further if contacted by the Financial Ombudsman or just strike it from my record? The accounts were something like £500-£700 OD a piece, which is all their charges for the phantom insurance. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

The first time I had a statement was 3 months later, and I hadn't checked it online as I knew that I had made no transactions. The £100 (per account) had accumlated from their banking charges for being in an unauthorised overdraft.
The account wasn't a 'pay so much a month for toss benefits that nobody ever uses' type of account.
The paperwork all came in the same envelope so I just sent it all back. When two bank cards came through the post I wasn't too bothered as I thought I would only use one account.
Not the first time Natwest have pulled this one by the sounds of it as my mother opened an account with the them, and they opened two accounts instead of one. It's not like the online/paper forms are something that I'd like to fill out twice. ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
