I know the corner you mean
I made some chav in a saxo crash with him trying to catch me on the diversion. Went round a 90 degree corner at about 70 or so, look in my mirrors to see him spin off backwards into a grass verge.
How I laughed. ____________________ www.southwestbikers.com

Lol, you're not alone in this. When I see bikes faster/bigger than mine (which is most of the time! ) I just go for it anyway. I get level at the lights and let rip, I normally beat them for the first 100-200 metres before they realise what I'm up to and zip past. I don't do it specifically to bait or even to try and win, it's just fun seeing bikes do what they do best!
I'm also suprised at just how many riders don't bother joining in, they are mainly the weekend warriors though who are probably too scared to open the throttle more than a tenth of the way in case it spoils the chrome... ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.

Was this a Xsara VTS? Very capable cars, I used to race bikes on twisty roads in Scotland in mine all the time. To be honest, on those sort of roads you'll be backing off in the car if you're a decent driver Obviously you've no chance under acceleration but round corners a good car will normally beat a bike and Xsara VTSs are very good round corners, real sleepers to be honest. ____________________ ZX6R + CBR600RR |

I was on a stretch of the A166 between York and Stamford Bridge a few years back where there's a decent chicane (advisory 40mph limit... f*ck off! ). I was "making progress" and I saw 2 bikes catching me in my mirrors. The whole section of road is double solid white lines, as it's not safe for anything to overtake... So to save holding them up, I pushed the accelerator through the floor boards and flung my 1.9 turbo diesel Pug 306 into the bends... tyres peeling off the rims sort of stuff. Came out of the bends at 90ish, at which point the bikes flew past me, leaving me as if I was stood still! They both gave me a hearty as they passed! I felt special that day! ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125

Glad to see I'm not the only one who does this
Tommy, no it's not a Xsara VTS unfortunately just a standard 1.6, does handle suprisingly well though, I'd love to get some decent wheels and tyres on it and a strut bar and I reckon it'd hold it's line very well.
I also wound down the windows last night just to hear him scream past
God damn I need to get a bike out here! ____________________ wizzzard wrote: Imagine God just stopping by, tidying your front room up and then quietly letting himself out again. Statisticly more likely to happen than Korn being on here. |

I love to see bikes going for it! If the rider is so easily persuaded that he feels he has to race you then he's taking his own chances isnt he. Not entirely your fault!
I did have a giigle when me and the mrs watched a bloke on a ducati try and take the inside line around a transit van on a roundabout on Saturday night. Poor guy ran out of confidence and skill at about 15mph whilst the van went sailing past.

not so sure about cars being quicker... had a play with an evo 10, i was quicker on straights (not by a lot, mind), and i let him lead me down some bends, the thing that got me was the way the car just lapped up all the loose shit, pot holes etc, where i had to back off he just gripped and fucked off, i was carying a good lean angle and sticking with him but i would have been going quicker if i was in front...
so yes i would have been going quicker (hardly - im talking 5 - 10mph speed differences here) but cars dont have to worry anywhere near as much about road conditions, and they can be pretty much on par with a bike... ____________________ follow my racing season

I'm not sure about weaving through a series of cones - all the comparisons I've seen the bike has easily won because it's taken the shorter route.
However, that's not quite the point, to be fair, though is another plus point for bikes on the road.
I'm definitely more confident on bikes than in (fast) cars. I still don't turn as quickly as I can, but, at say the bottom of the mountain at Cadwell, I don't think a car could get through there near as quick as a bike could flick side to side. As I say, throw braking into the mix and it's another matter.
Though, on that, I'm definitely more confident going into a corner on the brakes on a bike, but that's an experience thing. |
