Just started doing basic maintenance of my bike, been a bit hesitant with doing things as I'm a total novice, but thought why not get involved and start with a simple spark plug change. So did that and realised the old one had corroded and was probably causing some of the problems I was having.

Anyway I decided to jump on with just my helmet and bike jacket and take it for a quick ride to see if it would have made any difference, and thought it would be ok to leave the gloves for now as I'm not going far. Came up to a cross roads with the lights on green, i was going straight on so it was my right of way and some black BMW came from nowhere and cut across my path....everything went in slow motion and I locked the back brake up and luckily the rear of the bike slid out to the left and put me at an angle where i was able to put the power back on and pop through the gap behind the Beemer while slightly clipping his bumper.

My heart was going like fuck and all I could think was If i'd have come off my hands would have been in bits. Saw a pic of a guy on one of the threads who came off a lot faster and his hands made me queasy. Well lesson learned.... Slow down at junctions and wear all you gear!!!

This morning I had to pop round a friends to drop something off, literally 2 minutes down the road. I thought about not wearing gloves as I actually love the feeling of riding without gloves (have done it a couple of times before on my road for 2 secs). However I decided not to take the chance, it only needs one mistake and not by me either!
You've just confirmed I made the right decision, and it also means I'll keep on making that decision and not risking my hands in future so thanks for that. Thumbs Up

You've also had a VERY lucky escape, hopefully you'll keep your gloves on in future too!

(Why is it always BMW drivers? Rolling Eyes )

Yeah I notice that while I'm driving too about the BMW riders. There's got to be some sort of reason behind it.

And the gloves thing, I actually thought before I set off, should I get my gloves as I looked at the Not Safe For Work thread in General Bike Chat and saw that guy had gone through a cheese grater.

Hmmm.... gloves are my friends.

good guess aye Laughing
no but seriously, bmw drivers are the worst.
almost got nailed by a 4x4. i was pulling out of a junction, halfway up a big hill. clear both ways to the top and bottom, so i pull out then this 4x4 basically clips my front wheel, came over the hill at about 70 in a 30 zone, scarred the shit out of me, would of killed me if i was a foot forwards. and the driver didnt even stop/slow down. nothing.

Did you not chase? i'd have chased him and dragged him out of the fucking car, this is where wearing gloves is handy, carbon fibre to the face is never good.

Think the problem with BMW drivers is that their cars are so well built and feel so responsive they inspire way to much confidence in their own driving ability. I'm firmly of the belief if you put almost anyone in a relatively good car their driving will get more aggresive.

Glad you made it ok though. Look on the bright side it's a pain free lesson and they are the best kind Thumbs Up

Busy crossroads in London, I shot through the gap through pure luck, in order to turn back round and chase him would have required me to overcome the shock of almost getting taken out, and the timing to spin around and get through the lights without getting hit a second time.

In that situation the fear well out-weighed the "I'm going to fucking kill you" factor.

Funnily enough though I did think about the gloves 5mins after and thought how useful the could have been in pulling this berk out the car and pounding on him.

Knowing my luck he would have had a gun or some sort of shank!!

My video playing days will forever be in 'safe hands' from now on... well that is unless my arms get ripped off somehow.

Dance!

Shit daffyd, your dam lucky Rolling Eyes

Hope all is going well with the bike Thumbs Up

I had a close encounter the other day with a foreign twat on a push bike.

I was on a 4 lane roundabout at night, about 11pm, and i was on the far left lane, about to take the first left off, when out of no where a push bike with no lights or reflectors whatsoever just wandered into my light beam...

He was swaying all over the road as if he was doing a slalom or something, he must have been drunk!

I swurved to go left of him and he just shot in front of me, as if he was trying to cut my path! I broke extremely hard and honked my horn! Mad

I shouted at him "what the fuck do you think you're doing you twat, you'll get yourself killed!" he was an indian guy i think, he just mumbled back in his language.

That has been my only close call in my whole 5 months of riding! I'm not looking forward to having cars involved Confused

No matter who it is, what ever they are on, there's always people who seem to think motorbikes don't exist anymore...

Protective gear is essential! That's why i have stepped up from textile to leather Very Happy

Ride safe daffyd Thumbs Up
