Hi,

I have been meaning to post this for ages. I was just wondering if anyone suffers from this condition or knows of anyone who does? I'm just amazed that people literally go without sleep. That's not healthy. I don't even know what's wrong with the person to cause it. So can anyone enlighten me or have any stories about the condition?

Cheers,

Will

I've had mild insomnia before, dunno what caused it but for a couple of months I was only getting 2-3 hours of forced sleep a day. Shocked

It can be caused by many things, physical or mental. In fact when you see a psychiatrist the first thing he'll probably ask you is how have you been sleeping.

I'm suffering from it at the moment (it is not unusual for people who have suffered a very bad brain injury Sad ), and I am also suffering from fatigue which is strange as you'd think if you're tired all the time you'd be able to sleep really easily but sadly not Sad. It takes me a good few hours to get off to sleep and in that time I've just got stuff running through my mind again and again, and I will wake for literally anything and everything or sometimes for no reason at all.

They give you doses of sleeping tablets but they are not strong at all, and they keep going on about how they cant give me more as your body will just need an increase in a few months again but taking a few tablets each evening has got to be more healthy than not sleeping Confused.

The physcologist and the doctor (not that he ever comes to see me Evil or Very Mad Middle Finger ) are both aware of the problems I'm having, and its slightly easier as I'm now in a side room as opposed to being on the ward so it is quieter at night and I can keep it dim as well (well I am keeping it dim 24hrs a day as light makes my eyes and headache worse Sad ).

One very tired but unable to sleep Ste

I've had sleeping trouble for the past 8 or 9 years.

Earlier this year I was up almost all night then falling asleep at like 5/6 AM for a bit. A couple of days over Xmas, I just didn't bother going to bed (when I was off work, off work is BAD as i can't sleep AT ALL unless i'm out all day)

A few months back it started to get so bad that I was unable to get up in the mornings, consequently means I've been late for work every day for the past 2/3 months, big trouble I thought but they seem to understand, they just moan at me for being late lol.

Anyway, about 3/4 weeks ago I got so bad that I made meself quite ill and riding to work in the mornings, admittedly was just stupid, too tired to be on a bike and I shouldn't have actually ridden to work at all!

I went for a week of feeling so crap that I couldn't be fucked to do anything, so stayed out of IRC, stayed off the net a /bit/ and got some early nights, that lasted a week and went back to normal times for a week or so.

This past week I've been getting about 5/6 hours a night but forcing myself to get up for 7 AM so I can actually get into work on time.

Once I get to sleep I'm fine, normally can't get up again lol but it's actually getting to sleep that's the problem, tried sleeping pills, horlicks, whisky , hammer, combinations of the lot.. etc... none seem to work really.

You learn to live with it really, you need to get into a proper routine I think, that's what I'm trying to do now, 7am wake up and then the aim is I'll get so tired I need to go to bed earlier etc...

Normally get so tired that you just can't sleep, which sounds weird, but it's true, I can be sat at work almost asleep, or sat at my desk unable to hold my head/arms up yet if I get into bed, wide awake again Confused

And mornings are difficult because just too tired and physically drained to do anything, thus all the coffee and shite and red bull if I'm really shattered.

The worst bits are when you get so tired that your vision goes blurry and ya start seeing things flying across the pc screen Laughing and you get dizzy and stuff Mad

If you are suffering from it, from what I've read written by neurologists getting into the same pattern or routine is very important and helpful as your body gets set into it. Also be aware (although I'm sure your doctor would tell you) that the tablets take about 30mins before they start to take effect. The annoying thing in hospital is the drugs round can vary by anything up to 2 hours so getting into a routine is very hard Sad.

Doctors aren't any help at all, so I don't bother. Went a few years ago and they didn't offer any help at all with anything.

I only have those herbal sleeping pills so nothing major but none of those work, apparantly whiskey makes you really really tired, I thought that'd especially work for me, as I don't usually drink. But no that didn't work so I just learn to live around it.

A proper pattern, lots of water, good diet and some exerice would help a lot of problems, but I'm too tired to do any of that so it's a crappy circle or doom really Laughing

Have a pint of Guinness makes you (well me) really sleepy (plus it makes you fart too Silence )

The best thing to do is clear your mind and you'll fall asleep straight away.

me too - it's always when I'm lying trying to get to sleep that my brain decides it's a good time to think about all sorts of things, or to have creative ideas...

For me its weird, I just stop myself from thinking about stuff, and I drift off.

I used to be an insomniac when I was a kid and I just couldn't sleep.
Turned out I was drinking too much coke and was up all night Laughing

Iv'e started to find that I don't sleep at night unless I have had a smoke. It's the same with eating. If I havn't smoked anything, everything tastes like shit (except Swaff's wife's Steak and Ale pie Wink ) but If I am leen, everything tastes amazing!

Sod the neighbors, they would do it to you given half the chance Wink

Do you ever wear earplugs when sleeping? I find this a great help. when you are lying in total silence your mind doesn't latch on to every little sound when your trying to nod off. If your a light sleeper like me it really will help. When I hear noises at night that keep me awake I don't think it's because it is particularly loud. It's because it's annoying and gets you agitated, ie tweeting birds Confused

I suffered for insomnia after new year this year. It lasted just over a month and was caused by emotional upheaval (relationships, stuff going on at work). For me (like others), it's not being able to switch your brain off....your thoughts are so prominent and actively running around your mind that sleep is impossible. The more I would try to get to sleep, the more I would worry, and the more I would worry the worse it got. I didn't get more than 2-3 hours sleep per night.

I tried a load of things - herbal remedies, sleeping pills, red wine before bed, hot baths, no caffeine....the red wine seemed to work but then I get hang overs after 2 glasses and a hangover is not good to have at work!

Anyway, apart from the odd sleepless night when I'm worrying about something, it seems to have gone Smile
