We're moving house soon, so I have to change addresses with all the different companies and agencies, etc.

I mailed Bennets to see if they charge for it. They do.. £25.

To me this seemed a lot, so I mailed them;

Hi

Many thanks for the reply.

Just one more question, can you tell me why there's a fee for such a minor change? It's just that as I am moving, I have to change the details on the following as well, and just for comparison, these are their charges;

BT - Change of phone number = Free

House Insurance = Change of address = Free

Car Insurance - Change of address = Free

DVLA - Change of licence details = Free

UKTV - Change of address on TV licence = Free

RBOS Banking - Change of address = Free

Nildram - Change to Broadband account = Free

Bennets Bike Ins - Change of address = £25

Now, of course it was my choice to accept a policy with those admin charges at the time, something I shall be bearing in mind come renewal time, obviously, but I was hoping in the meantime, you could possibly give me some idea as to why it's so expensive, especially when compared to similar agencies.

To me it would seem that £25 for a 60 second job of punching in a new address on the database is somewhat overpriced, some might say extortionate, but maybe I'm missing something in the equation..?

Before anyone accuses me of whinging, I'm not, well a bit maybe, but I was more interested to see how they would justify it.

Do you think they have?;

Thank you for your email.

We charge a fee to enable us to finance the administration and customer services we provide and to cover our overheads we need to charge an administration fee for any additional services we provide to our customers. It may seem a lot to charge for a simple task, but a lot goes on behind the scenes to ensure we provide a service that enables us to quickly make any changes to your policy. This ensures you remain legal to drive on the road and remember this includes any amended documentation sent out to you.

As I intimated in my mail, I realise that I signed up with them so therefore it was my choice, but I honestly don't see how a company like BT or my ISP can do it for free when there is obviously a lot more involved in changing my details, and yet they charge £25 just for entering a new address into the computer.

Tbh, I was almost hoping they would just say "Yes, we make money on it" rather than the flannel about 'behind the scenes' and 'sending out documentation'.

Just one thing in their favour, so far they've been pretty good in every other respect, I have to say, which is why this isn't a full blown complaint.

Im with bikesure, changed address twice last year and they sorted it without charge.

The second time they actually refunded me £7.40 as my premium dropped because I moved to a better area!

They've basically resorted to scaremongering. The rest of the charges (in terms of overheads) are factored into the cost of insurance. No self respecting financial planner would rely on an unknown income to satisfy a fixed set of outgoings.

That said it seems to be a pretty common practice in the insurance industry, it's just another revenue stream for them. In real terms, it probably costs closer to £5 to make the change.

I suppose the thing is to ask about it before accepting the policy, if more people did this the industry would eventually catch on, the lost revenue would then be added onto premiums and we'd all feel a bit better but not necessarily be better off.

Mmm... Neutral

So what they're saying is that there isn't a a cost built into your premium already, which funds their overheads and provides them with a system which should sufficiently be able to manage your policy and maintain your address as the same time.
So in their minds the only way to supply such a system is to hit everyone for 25 to fund the individual system which is responsible for recording addresses Shocked

What a load of shit. It's not like the system didn't already have an address stored on it. You did have an address already listed right ?
So how the fuck can a alteration to an already existing field be worth that sort of price.

I'd like to be the prick on the other end of the line earning 25bucks every 60 seconds. Bastard could retire in a months time.
Must be a high turn over in that role.
Unless the skills required to perform such a task are almost unattainable.

more to the point how can they say that this is a service they offer.
Aren't they responsible for keeping their records up to date?
Surely it is you who is doing them a service so they know where to send the minimal cheque after they're finished raping you when you finally make a claim.

Maybe you should have just suggested they provide you with details on how to cancel your policy if they wished to charge a ridiculous amount for a for such a simple task. Middle Finger

I know you said they've been pretty good thus far but I'd be expecting a sympathy blow job if you ever have an off they're aware of. Just to make up for the out of pocket Smile

Remember companies like Bennetts are only brokers and not the actual underwriter.
As such when you take up the policy they get commision. So a broker that does not charge may take the full commision. While the likes of Bennets may take a chunk out of their commision and pass that as a saving to you on the policy cost.
Which is why they can undercut other brokers.

Also the likes of BT will sign you upto a new 12 month contract when moving and if the new property does not have a connected line will also hit you with a £122 instulation charge for the line... So that FREE update of address, may not be so cheap.
Same may go for your isp as well. Or while the update of the address is free, they charge you for moving the adsl from your current address to the new one (BT have a standard charge for this) may isp may cover it for one move, others won't.

Yes the admin charge is excessive and hopefully a target for the OFT soon. Trouble is, while it saves money for the movers. It will up the price for the non-movers Crying or Very sad

I know my insurance company have an admin charge to, £10 admin fee for renewing and If I want anything during the year like an update then they charge me £30. They say my insurance is cheap enough apparently Confused They get paid ffrom me for doing a job they already get paid for from the boss. It is a rip off. They have also charged me bew customer fee?? despite being with them 4 years. Rolling Eyes

I still get cheap insurance but I can still moan about stupid payments as I am not loaded and its better off in my pocket.

Can't remember who my bike ins is with, but it sure as hell isn't with any of these dedicated bike companies, generally they are more expensive. .

As for the change of address, I'd have thought there should be a clause written into the contract about change of detail/admin carges as most companies don't charge for such things.

DVLA charge, but they have to re-issue a card/paperwork, but in this case, its just pee taking me thinks.

When your renewal time comes around, go through the process at https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/cheap-motorbike-scooter-insurance and then find the cheapest one that doesn't do the admin charge. You owe these companies no loyalty whatsoever. Thumbs Up
