keys down the drain

Yesterday at work I did the most dumb thing ever

was just about to go out for lunch on the CG- the boss caught me just as I was about to go off and beckoned me over to where he and some colleagues were...as he wanted me to do something whilst in town

I turned ignition off put side stand down, had to shuffle forward a few inches as there was a storm drain and didn't want the bikes stand going through the gap (as it would make me look like a stupid newby in front of everyone!-despite being kitted out in full textiles on a scorchio day on an L plated CG)

I took ignition keys out of the barrel, and promptly dropped them clean through the storm drain cover...nice satisfying plop noise as they hit the water!, didn't even catch the side of any grating...straight down (big gloves/manual dexterity lost rather than good aim)
The crowd that had witnessed it were agog at my clumsiness and were all pretty much speechless

VERY luckily I had attached a spare plastic 35mm film cannister onto the key ring (housing a couple of pairs of earplugs) ...not that I have ever used them or need them on the CG, but was left attached anyway as I do use them in my kit car so just like to have a spare new set handy- turns out it also makes em float in water...luckily for me. Good job I have been too lazy to take the cannister off the key ring...think its going to stay attached

Drain cover got pulled up and an arms length away...there they were bobbing in the black water
promptly got shoved back in the ignition and tried to pretend nothing had happened...

This must have been done before?...gloves just make me soo clumsy...perhaps its all in the order of mount/dismount procedure?
(I've already done the gloves on before helmet comedy skit- luckily no witnesses...doh!)

I have to say I do sometimes find myself looking at the ground around where I choose to park to see if there are any drains etc. and I have dropped my keys by my bike before.

Not strictly motorcycle related, but a few weeks ago someone local to me was walking home from a night out on their birthday, needless to say they were drunk and dropped their keys down a drain, they tried to get them out and (tragically I must say) fell in head first, dying off asphixiation.

yeah i've had a couple of issues with my winter gloves and dropping my keys (not in drains in general)

did it once with my house keys when i called for my mate running while putting them in my pocket missed pocket and the skated across the other side of the road and down a drian

luckly i have a massive dog chocker chain attached to them and had to get my mate to come down with a mop as it had a hook on the end and fish them out as far as the bike keys go i make sure i take off my gloves before i handle them as id be really screwed if i lost them
