Without having the whole thing off and repainted?

Use a small wire brush get most of the oxidisation and the bad paint off. wipe down, re spray

That is only the rocker cover at the top of the pic (is that a Honda?) so removing that and replacing is a walk in the park.

I'll be re-spraying my Fazer at some point, make sure you use high temp paint and it'll look much better. Preperation is the key though, remove all old oxidisation from the alloy and use a sealing primer if at all possible.

Cheers

I found Hammerite special metals primer to be excellent for alloy.

I have seen entire engines undercoated with it, goes on with a brush but is very even, I would imagine that would be easier than trying to spray it on.

An alternitive is to polish the alloy. Once highly polished it resists corrosion and is relatively easy to maintain.

Hows that? I can't see how polishing metal will change/cover the surface so it is resistant to corrosion. Plus, getting to the rocker cover to keep it clean isn't easy.

has anyone ever had a rockercover powder coated?

how well did it hold up heat wise?

Considering the powder coat is baked on at something like 300 degrees, it should be fine.

The precise science of it I dont know, but i presume on a highly polished surface there is less surface area of alloy to oxidise and crap doesnt stick as readily to polished surfaces.

I had a GSXR1100 that I polished the frame on- The initial polishing took a while, but was once done the finish was quite resilient and only needed going over with a polishing mop once in a while to keep it clean and shiny.

Factories paint the engines because is cheaper, not better. I worked in Rolls Royce aerospace plant in Bristol and they polish engine parts to help it resist corrosion, paint isnt used anywhere important.

Polishing is just removing the oxidised layer. If the surface is very smooth it should delay the buildup of aluminium oxide.

I know there is a big gap-thats why they polish expensive aero engines....

Polishing an engine takes a long time in mass production terms hence why they use paint on cheap bikes.

Some more expensive bikes are given a rough polish then hard anodized (FZR1000EXUP, GSXR1100 among others)
