It isnt bothering me, In fact I think its cool as f*ck as it spits flames out of both cans. Smile

But my question is, Why has it only just started doing it?

It's a 2001 Suzuki TL1000RY. Fuel Injection, With Quill Carbon Cans (Which were new when I got the bike).
It's done 10,000 miles, And is well serviced.

A few days ago I was on a big ride out with a few mates, Hacking it at around 140 along the A20, Rolled off for the roundabout, And I heard an almighty bang.
Mate behind on his R1 shat his pants.

Since then it just got more frequent when rolling off on and running on the over run.

Tonight I was on a bit of a ride, And every time I shut the throttle off I'd get a couple off pops and some flames.

Just interested in what could of caused it to start doing this.

Mine did this when I got it. Balanced the throttle bodies and it stopped.
If its running rich from the cans though a power commander and dyno time will cure it.

Possible air leak somewhere in the exhaust system.

Cheers for the replies. Gonna strip the fairings off soon to give it a good clean anyway. So I'll change the plugs and check the exhaust over.

How would redex cure a sticky exhaust valve?

(Don't think TLR has a valve in the exhaust anyway..)

I'm guessing if you have a big air leak into the pipe the O2 sensor in the pipe would make the FI think the mixture is weak and richen the mix alot-would explain the bangs and flames.

Check the pipe for any visible signs of blowing paying particular attention to joins. Look out for soot. Find your O2 sensor and make sure the connections are ok.

Could the carbon cans be the source of the (potential) air leak. Wave managed to knacker his cans on the SP1 on his recent trip almost setting the rear alight.

They've been on it since I got the bike. And always been fine.
Although I was talking to a bloke at ebbsfleet the other night who really seemed to know his stuff.

He was saying big V twins need the end cans re-packing occasionally because the pulses of the engine just blow all the fiberglass packing out of the end cans.

The bike doesn't seem louder though.

I dont mind the bangs, I think it sounds phat! I just don't want any long term damage on the engine.

Every bike needs to have it's can re-packed. It's just V-twins are a little harder on cans than 4s.

Guess I've never owned a bike long enough to need to do this. Laughing
