Yes, they may have only helped catch 1 prson for every 1000 cameras, but thats still 1000 (1mil cameras over 1000) criminals caught because of them, and they more than likely include murderers, rapists, terrorists, muggers etc etc.

Thats 1000 people convicted of a crime that woulnt of been without CCTV.

Also, it doesnt state if crime has dropped overall. The cameras are a deterent, without them, crime would be out of control by now

Don't think crime's dropped overall.

Also strongly disagree what crime would be out of control if we didn't have them.

People know that you get so few convictions from them, and thus they aren't much of a deterrent if you know you're very unlikely to get convicted.

Personally I don't see the need for the current size of the CCTV network.

It's like saying we may as well have ID cards because you have nothing to fear if you've done nothing wrong. That's not really the point. I don't think the government should be able to know what we are up to all the time we are out of the house.

I would much rather see the camera budget spend on putting plod on the beat.

In some ways, i agree, but CCTV is mainly an initial outlay. Maintainance cost is miniscule to employing loads of beat rozzers. Although a police presence is difficult to achive, because of the lack of people interested in becomming officers. The uk population is increasing, and the number of officers arn't in proportion, so thats why PCSO's were introducted, and the widespread use of CCTV.

CCTV only prevents crime through deterent. Shoplifters are usully caught on the internal shops cameras, who then inform the external operaor, who guide police. If the shops dont spot or report the incident immediatly, how are the police ment to react? Shops generally dont record or monitor images, so no evidence can be shown, hence no conviction. Exterior systems are always monitered, and 99% of the time catch the criminal.

You cant cover every square inch of this country, but how often do you see a REPORTED crime in a city centre go without an arrest? Pickpockets are too good for the naked eye, let alone a cctv system, but mugging on the strets are down, violence is down, but it has move to uncovered areas, such as parks and alleys.

But the public know those places are risky, so there is a downside to the system, but it does show some control is being gained.

NO - the system isnt perfect, but its not the system, its the people operating it. If they sorted themselves out, the system would be a lot more effictive.

Any stats to back that one up?

On shop systems, from my experience the police won't even bother turning up unless over about £100 has been nicked. Sometimes they don't even turn up to collect the tapes we save for them.

Last year, due to rising crime levels and general vandalism in the area, it was decided that we should install a CCTV system at work. I personally designed and installed the system. One of my colleagues ridiculed me for going over the top and suggested that I was displaying the signs of paranoia normally suffered only by readers of The Daily Mail! I challenged him to a wager of £1.00 that one day our system would be instrumental in solving a major crime.
We didn't have long to wait. Within a month I arrived at work one day to find the whole area cordoned off and swarming with police. Ther'd been a murdha. Our DVR was seized as evidence and duly provided the identity of the perpetrator.
Good result all round. Old bill got their man and I got my quid!

Is there not some mad statistic that we in the UK have under 1% of the world population but 20% of it's CCTV cameras Shocked .

I'm sure somebody could confirm or correct me on that.

I think you're about right with those figures Wishaykillie.

I find CCTV pretty intrusive when I notice it, but it doesn't really bother me that much. I suspect it's one of those things that people aren't going to agree on. It does help solve a lot of crimes, and does deter crime in a lot of places - probably by displacing a lot of it to shadier areas.

If your stolen car was recovered, or your robber was caught, etc etc etc then you'd probably have a positive view of CCTV. If that didn't happen to you, then you wouldn't.

I think the bbc figures are wrong. I think cctv cameras give footage which is used in lots of prosecutions, and for police officers to respond to incidents spotted on camera, and preventing crime because bad uns know they are being watched.
