Hi everyone i was just wondering what is the best 400cc motorbike you can get cos I'm just about to do my test and i can restrict it to 33 bhp and wondered what bike i can get???

You might be better looking at 500 & 600 cc bikes and restricting them.
Your average 400 will have been through a lot of hands, most being new riders and finding a good one is a long process.

400cc bikes are quite small, so it depends on how tall you are. Im 5 foot 10 and it can feel a little cramped at times, mainly cos i got long gangly legs

The ZXR400 is wider than a VFR400 and better looking IMHO.
Yeppers they will have been through loads of owners, and yes it can be quite difficult to get a decent one. Also, parts for some are hard to get 2nd hand, and new ones cost the earth.

e.g. oil cooler + radiator direct from Cradley Kawasaki for a ZXR400 L1 costs nearly £800, and i need one for my project ZXR that i have in the garage.

However, if you find a 1980 - 1995 sports bike in original condition, with no mods expect to pay over the odds for it as they are becoming a much sought after bike, hence why i am restoring the project using Kwak parts not pattern parts.

400's are good little blitzy bike, they scream their tits off everywhere they go and sound well sexy @ 10.5k rpm.

What are you going to be using your bike for? Commuting, track days, weekend blitz, touring etc etc.

Agree iooi, 400's are getting on abit now and generally overpriced and tbh your money would be better spent on a 600. They arent that much more to insure and run, and if you are worried a 600 is too much its not actually that big a leap, i was dissappointed when i moved up from a 4 to a 6. However also agree with Cansa that if you are willing to throw a bit of cash at one you can get good examples and they are cracking bikes and many are becoming collectors items. Tend to find that old bikes can quickly become moneypits having to fix stuff that are getting worn and breaking with age, but if you have the time and money its worth it, otherwise spend the cash on something a bit newer and faster.

The way 400's hold their money if they are good ones and so many bad ones around,a cheaper option is to get a 600 because you will probably hold onto it after your restriction ends.

hi guys thanks for all the advise, i would mostly using the bike to just ride around and go to places with and probably use to ride to work if the weather is good and i am only 17 and i am doing my test and wondered what bike would be best for me, its would be a 400 but if not then it would be a 250 because i think that jumping to a 600 would be a bit big for me.

I went from 50>125>650 and found that its ok because you will have a restriction in it.

i would say that the best 400s are vfr/rvf. If you get one, i've got a restrictor kit you can have for not much.

Same applies if you see sense and buy an R6.

I say get a 600. Restrict it if you like, but ive ridden them for 2 years now and loved it. No urge to get a 1000 either.

The only lesser cc i would get would be a big single. The rest just dont cut it for me.

hiya yea i was looking at a rvf that was on ebay it looked quite nice but I'm not to sure whether a 400 is good cos decent ones are about 2500 and with that amount of money i could save up a little more and get a 600???

Dude, the chances are you will wrap your 1st big bike somehow. Get a common bike that it will easy and cheap to get parts for.

EG Bandit 600 or a cbr600 etc etc

Yeah know that it has to look pretty, but dont let that take preference over the sensible bits like repairs and insurance and stuff.;

Yamaha SRX400 is a goodun, uses almost the same everything as the SRX600 and the motor is the same as the XT400/600 even down to oil filters n plugs.

Suzuki Goose 350 is also a goodun, DR350 engine, most parts come from other models.

Both have sporty handling and engines that are about 33hp on the nose.

If you must buy a larger bike and restrict it, get one that is as close to 33bhp as possible to start with. Strangling a bigger motor on a heavier bike isnt agood idea.

Having ridden a restricted XJ600 ( a natural 60hp) over 250 miles in one trip, I can tell you its a journey I dont want anyone else to experience!

EDIT:

Plugs aren't an all day affair :s about an hour at most for anyone who's touched a spanner.

Got my vfr, very good condition, for 1100. [ wrecked it now though, panels are too expensive!] RVF's always expensive, cbr's and vfr's are cheap.

VFR parts are cheap enough apart from plugs. Just get things second hand. Sure its same for other 400's.

Why people are against 400's as much as some people on here I have no idea. Genuinely confused as I've used mine all year around and it's been great
