Ask the surgeon during his visit to see you just before your op about the pins- they normally let you keep them.

I asked about mine but never got them, gutted lol

Not sure about the x-rays, might be best to ask after you have had the pins removed as you will probably have a x-ray or two then, then you could ask to see them and take some pics on your phone or whatever Smile

Anyway, good luck- your be fine, just rest up for a while after Smile

I would recommend having some time off after having metal work removed- been there, done it and it can knock you sideways for a day or two lol

You will probably find that you are more comfortable when the pins are removed, once your over the op of course. Based on experience though, dont push yourself too much when the holes are filling back in- does it no good at all long term.

Although it might seem a bit strange me saying this, but dont worry too much about the future and any problems with it. Luckily, as its your hip, they can replace them no matter what your age is- and even replace the replacement if the need arises.

They said they dont want to replace it due to my age, and it wont stop me, its just the waiting that pisses me off, i crashed last july and i've been waiting till now to find out my arm will kind of be ok but my leg is still a mystery, i absolutly hate waiting it pisses me off to no end once they replace my hip which they will have to do, i'll have to get my muscles back all over my body as i watch them waste away again, am just mega down about it now and i shouldnt be at all.

I completely understand that its difficult- especially when you cant do things that you used to, and then you watch everyone else getting on with their life but your kind of just stuck. Sad i think you can only properly understand it if you have been in a similar situation but people tend not to understand otherwise to be honest Confused

I buggered my ankle joint up completely a few years ago, like you I cant have it replaced due to my age but I have had it fused instead in my latest operation.

Unfortunately, bones seem to take ages to heal- but they do get there Smile And Im sure your be feeling better once they take out the pins too Smile

they wont let you keep the metalwork. I asked during a local anaesthetic screw removal and they said it was a health risk or something.

Could be a different story with the other stuff i've got to get taken out at some point (tibial rod, plates in both feet, wrists, hands) as they cause a little discomfort sometimes, but all you can do is ask.

The lesson learned is learn to crash better (in your case)

When my finger was FUBAR'd I asked for the x-rays.

They said no, but if I really wanted them I'd have to submit it in written form under the freedom of information act, which I felt was far too much work.

Hope your hip is okay!

When i broke my leg in switzerland, i was given a full folder ofc hard copies of all the xrays taken. There were about 20 of them.

The nhs will charge you for iit, but you can take photos of theml.

I got all (well, most of my xrays...there were only 3 CDs full Sad ) of my xrays. Had to ring up 'access to records' at pinderfields hospital in wakefield (obviously not for you as you aren't in the same trust).

He sent me a form i had to fill in (although he filled in half of it for me), sent it back with a £20 cheque (£10 for the data protection act and £10 NHS admin fees). Few weeks later i got a jiffy bag with some CDs in full of xrays and a report for every single xray Razz

My surgeon better let me keep my rods, plates and screws when they are taken out at the end of the year (roughly), will be pretty pissed if he doesn't Laughing

No doubt there will be some random complication, last time i went into theatre i ended up back in ICU Rolling Eyes

Medical records aren't covered under free of information or data protection, they're covered by NHS rules which are complicated and give them the right to withhold any part of your notes if they want. £10 admin fee, then something like 10p for each side of A4, upto a maximum of £50. You have to write a letter to your consultant or GP to get a copy of your notes.

Then once you've given your letter to the consultant/ GP (could be done in person, or even whilst you're an inpatient) you'll receive a letter from "Health Care Records Department" who'll want you to fill out a form giving them information they already know and providing them with one form of photo id (driving license, passport)and one proof of address (utility bill). Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

It's almost like they want to make it complicated and slow just to discourage people from seeing their medical records. Rolling Eyes

Quite possibly because they want to keep quiet various medical fuckups, as law suits can be expensive.

As for x-rays, mine cost £11 per copy. Worth getting for bragging rights tho.

Thanks Ste, always fancied reading through my folder(s) of notes Smile

Good job it is capped at £50 though, or do they make exceptions? I have 2 folders around 2 inch thick and another at around 1 inch thick...everytime i see them they are getting fatter though Shocked

Also, is the amount they charge dependant on the trust or is it standard throughout the NHS?

As it happens im sat in hospital after having the metal in my thigh removed this afternoon. With a bit of luck i should be out tomorrow.
Its not that painful but i wouldnt expect to be doing much for the next week while things heal. unfortunately i forgot to ask to keep the nail but they let me keep some smaller ones from my fingers before so they might let you keep them.
As said you have to apply in writing to get a copy of you note but normally you can get a dr to show you them and you can take a photo with you phone its not quite the same but its still something to show off.
