your insurance goes in as a normal claim as you were ridding, and to book one just ask your nearest dealer and ask they will give you all the info you need

I booked a test ride with a Honda dealership about two years ago. I had to sign a contract stating that if I crashed it there would be a £1000 excess to pay.

Surely an excess means you pay up to £1000 depending on the extent of the damage.

so if you drop it with minimal damage then you'll only pay for damage caused rather than paying £1k.

£1000 excess!

I wouldn't mind having a go on a brand new 600 to see the difference from my 98 zx6r. I have never ridden another 600 road bike before an think it would be interesting to see the difference with a view to getting one next year.

It'll vary from garage to garage but when I test rode a ZX6R a few years ago I had to sign up and agree to paying for any damage caused ! Write off the bike and I would have been liable for the total cost.

Within your post you've kind of stumbled upon why bike test rides are so much stricter than car ones ever are. Test rides or drives really and truly exist for punters who actually intend to buy the item that they are testing. In your case (and you are not alone) you just want to have a go at being a test pilot on someone elses bike, hence the high excess and difficulty in getting a test ride at all. If you are a serious punter and the dealer senses that then you are more likely to get a test ride easier.

You yourself have admitted that you might get one next year, which begs the question, why not wait until next year and test ride that bike? I am not really knocking you, I'm sure a lot of us have been in the same position but I do believe that this is the reason why test rides of new demonstrater stock is so coveted.

Agree with MattEMulsion

Went to George Whites yesterday for my missus to test ride a Gladius. We'd booked it but the bloke didn't tell us she needed to bring both parts of her licence when I phoned.

When we got there it hadn't been put in the book and as she only had the pink bit of her licence the salesman said she couldn't take it out.

I had a little rant as we had ridden down from MK and the manager came over. Within 30 secs the salesman went off to get the Gladius and five minutes later she was out on it.

My point is that if they think it could result in a sale, most dealerships will go out of their way to facilitate you having a test ride. If they think your just after a blast on a new bike, they'll find a way to say no.

The worst bike dealership I ever asked for a test ride from was 3X Motorcycles at Ringwood, although this was years ago and they seem to have improved since then. They sat me down and made me fill out a form, listing everything except my cat's name, then the bloke started this conversation:

Sales Bod: 'What's Your budget?'
Me: 'Enough'
SB: 'How much?'
M: 'Enough to buy the bike I want to test ride'
SB: 'We'll need your bank details before you go'
M: 'Why?'
SB: 'In case you crash it'
M: 'If I crash it, my insurance will be paying, not me'
SB: 'Yes, but there is a £500 excess'
M: 'Which is in my savings account, not my bank account'
SB: 'So give me your savings account details'
M: 'No.'

At that point I gave up and cancelled the test ride.

Cheers

Grim

lmao @ £1k deposit.

If they think you're serious about buying then you'll be allowed a test ride/drive without problems like that as they don't want to put off a potential buyer.

I got a test drive in an £18k car when I was 19. They wanted to see my license, they took it with them to go and check with a manager, they came back saying it was all ok. They hadn't noticed that it was a full motorcycle license and only provisional car. Laughing

policies might differ or could just have misunderstood one another, friend spoke to a dealer to book a test ride and they told him regardless of the damage hed have to cash up that 1k,

On my last test ride I just had to sign an insurance form and that was it, they were more than happy for me to ride the bike ~100 miles to roads I knew to get a proper feel for it, I suspect they were less than pleased about me getting caught up in a bit of a snow storm though. In hindsight I probably should have just parked up at home and paid for it over the phone to keep them happy, but the look on their faces as I nursed it through the icy dealership carpark was utterly priceless Laughing

Mind you I'd bet they would have been a lot less accommodating and humorous about it if I hadn't brought bikes from them in the past Smile
