Hit Air Airbag jackets

Anyone heard of them before? I have just got off the phone to the new distributors of them and will be getting one to review on Bikechatter shortly but they look like a bloody good idea, textile jackets with built in airbag systems that see to work properly too.

Not too sure on the cost of them but if they are released over here at an affordable price it should make a dent in the amount of injuries that us bikers get when we (inevitably) fall off.

They have a connection to the bike rather than the fancy gyrometer and accelerometer in the Dainese D-Air system but nevertheless I think in terms of safety technology they should be good!

At the end of the day, its a tube of air and so I can't see it protecting against anything really serious as some sources seem to suggest. It's good for reducing the impact on your back or ribs if you fall off, but hitting anything its going to be next to useless.

Then you have the issue of them inflating when not necessary, thereby ruining themselves.

I had a low speed spill recently, came off the bike, but no damage to me, and the jacket was pretty much unscathed too.

If I'd had one of these airbag jackets it would have been screwed and I'd need another one now.

What happens if it is accidently set off ?? can you repack the bag and reuse it ?

Yeah its reusable, you buy another gas cartridge for it and fold the airbag back into position.

What a great review idea. Give a jacket that's meant to protect you in a crash to someone who does hardly any mileage and is unlikely to crash.

Would get a better review giving it to a Brazilian courier on a Honda Dylan.

Been toying with the idea.

They dont go off acidently if you get of your bike without unclipping.

They come in long jackets around 500 quid and short jacket 450 and vests 350.

Spare cannisters around 20 - 30 quid.

For me if i had one tallied with fully comp would possibly mean i would push the boat out to far to early.

Whereas Third party and normal jacket i would bear that in mind, and save a packet !

For any speedfreaks they could help i suppose.

I've seem these for sale somewhere for £450 odd. They come with a plastic coil that hooks onto the bike and hooks onto the co2 can in the jacket. The jacket inflates in less than a second or something and only set off if something liek 30kg of pressure is applied, i.e. being thrown off the bike in a crash or falling off.

Seems like a good idea though...

Well I just got back from France a couple of weeks ago and did 2500 in just over a week, probably 600 since then and another 800-900 in the next couple of weeks.

Then its probably back off to France or Belgium on the next reviewing test run so probably 1500-2000 for that week too.

I test them for Bikechatter which is mainly aimed at motorcycle product reviews so they get plenty of use before I swap them for the next set of review items.

Why is it a better test on someone that does 50k miles a year rather than someone who does 10k miles a year if neither of them crash in that time? its the crash protection id be interested in more than comfort/waterproofness etc... any jacket can do that....
