throttle problem

it could be any number of things

have you put the throttle slide in the wrong way round?

is the throttle top tight?

when trying to adjust the mixture screw, did you adjust the throttle stop screw instead?

is your cylinder head tightened down properly

are there any air leaks between the carb and the cylinder?

did you use new gaskets when rebuilding it or try to get away with reusing the old one if so were any of them torn?

try a few of those & get back to us

Check that the piston is sitting in the carb correctly, and the needle is going into the emulsion tube correctly, check the throttle cable run for any kinks or trapping.

a sticking float needle could cause that if it's sticking closed causing the bike to starve as if it's just about to run out of fuel

as the bike will race just befor it cuts out

to be honest with you I think your problem is to do with having the wrong carb on it but as you admit yourself that you know so little about bikes it could be any number of rookie errors, & the bike might run ok with that carb on as long as it's set up corectly

my advics is still to put the stock carb back on it using the settings that I gave you in your other thread

unscrew the top of the carb, take the slide out and turn it 180 degrees, sounds like you've put it in backwards. theres a little groove on the slide, just make sure that its lined up with the peg in the carb body

Inside your carb is the carb slide / piston.

These can be put in back to front and go un noticed until you start the engine.

Basically there is a groove all the way down the carb slide. This has to line up with a little notch inside the carb so it will go all the way to the bottom.


It sounds like yours is in back to front causing it to sit at about 3/4 throttle.

take your throttle slide out, check that the needle is in there properly (ie it cant be pushed up into the slide when you put it back in the bike)

then refit the slide making sure the shamfered edge at the bottom faces toward the airbox

& make sure the needle slides into the emulsion tube (needle jet) properly on it's way in

befor you refit the slide make sure that the throttle stop screw is screwed almost all the way out so it isnt stopping the slide dropping straight to the bottom then you can adjust it when you get it started up

don't lube any part of the carb internals. Just make sure its very clean. The throttle stop screw is what usually controls the tickover speed. Its usually on the side of the carb body.

the throttle stop screw is the big one with a spring on the outside of it that screws into the side of the slide housing to adjust your tick over, if you look down the top of your carb you'll see the tip of the screw poking into the housing & will be able to watch it as you unscrew it
