Getting a bike for my 18th and need some advice

Hey everyone, im going to be taking my CBT on my 18th, and i was wondering if you could answer a few questions:

> What exactly do i have to do on the CBT test?

> What do you guys think about the Lexmoto Texan125 which is the bike im getting?

> How much do you think it will cost for a 18 year old to insure his bike after just passing the CBT test?

> Can anyone reccomend a cruiser/chopper 125cc bike if the Texan isnt the best choice. I have a budget of £1000.

The CBT is training, rather than a test.

The day goes more or less like:
1. introduction – booking in, an eyesight test then a safety talk
2. practical on-site training – learning the controls of the bike
3. practical on-site riding – learning to ride the bike
4. practical on-road training – a long but important talk
5. practical on-road riding – actually riding on the roads

The bike you mention seems to be a chinese cruiser, similar to the Jinluns.

Personally I would advise anyone against chinese motorcycles.

Quality control is awful, and although a few people anecdotally seem happy with their chinese 125, the vast majority have never-ending problems from bolts falling out, wiring catastrophes and instant rusting to frames snapping. If you want to read all the gory details, just search 'chinese' on here.

Put it this way, would you feel safe in a chinese copy of a Vauxhall Corsa that costs half the price of the genuine, made by peasants using scrap materials?

Anyway, for your budget and since you want a cruiser I'd say look at the Suzuki Marauder (GZ125).
I know that you can get decent looked-after examples for around a grand, because I was looking at them earlier in the year for my other half.

Stick to the big 4 japanese (Suzuki, Honda, Kawsaki and Yamaha) and you won't go far wrong. Some ideas to get you searching:

Honda Shadow VT125
Kawasaki Eliminator
Yamaha Virago XV125
Honda Rebel CA125
Suzuki Intruder VL125

Oh, and some of the above are single cylinder engines, but I'm sure a couple are V-twins. This may be of note if you like the traditional chopper-type sound as well as the look of cruisers.

Insurance, no idea.

Everyone is different as it's based on so many factors - postcode, age, job, where bike is stored, choice of bike, whether you want TPO/TPFT/Fully comp.

Do some online price comparisons to get a starting point. To get the best deal, the only way is to ring round and play the companies off each other.

as others say, stay away from a chinese make, even if you have to pay slightly more for a 2nd hand Jap bike they will hold there value alot better when you get bored of a 125

I was 19 at the time, but I bought a Chinese 125 and then did my CBT.

I recommend against a Chinese bike even though I was over all happy with my experience, in hindsight I was lucky to have as few problems as I did.

As for the CBT, you'll learn safety advice, what everything does on the vehicle, how to start and stop, how to turn, hopefully how to use the clutch and change gear, how to use your mirrors and indicators within the context of safely using junctions, some more vehicle control, a big talk before you get on the road, and finally some experience on the road with an instructor behind you. It's all pretty fun.

My insurance for my first year cost me £300 possibly because the bike was worth just £500 new. After nine months and thousands of miles though, that bike died a painful death. I assume you're talking only about third party insurance, it shouldn't be too much more than this figure.

My final bit of advice is to pay for just a little bit of extra tuition even once you have your CBT from a proper riding school. I had 2 or 3 extra lessons with a proper instructor about 4 months afterwards and he taught me some incredibly invaluable things that I would not want to be on the road without. I can now look back and see that those first 4 months on the road looked like me with a death wish.

Experience is good but quality teaching from someone experienced will help save your life.

For your first bike I would recommend the GN125 or Sr125. Especially if you want something that is cruiser ish. Both quite light and, shouldn't be too heavy on the insurance.
CBT isn't too bad. I did mine around a 6 weeks ago. Take every bit of info your instructor gives you in and trust them. You'll be fine. Enjoy it.

At 16 driving a 50cc my insurance was about £350, at 17 after 1 years no claims, its at £250 so i should think yours will be around £300ish
