The RVF has been so problematic recently, I was considering selling it but just over the weekend I decided I'd persevere and ordered some service items etc...

Arrow I've been riding around on a radiator that is more often than not leaking, my own fault 100% and I know how this was caused...
Arrow My 'coolant' is currently a nice cocktail of tap water, rad weld residue and Araldite Mr. Green I was planning to replace it with a Rick Oliver rad when my broke ass could afford it but a replacement seems to be on the bay so that's pukks.

Arrow The exhaust still blows, almost a year after I took it into college to sort it, I know it's coming from the header gaskets but IRCBA!
My idea with this is just to wait until I can afford a tyga system and sort it then... my MOT is at the end of next month so the complication will have to be swept under the carpet with a £20 note Wink

Arrow Rear tyre not roadworthy... was about till replace it until...*

Arrow Just had to replace the rear disk and pads for the second time in under 2000 miles, the caliper seized and made a nice mess of the disk. Its going strong now and I still have no Idea what caused it as the calipers had just been overhauled... inspection offered no faults.

Arrow Front disks and pads want replacing, was going to order EBC pro lite contoured disks this month but the bike keeps throwing problems at me so that'll have to wait.

Arrow Speedo drive on order, yes the nylon wheel that sits on the end of the output shaft actually wore itself round Rolling Eyes

Arrow Suspecting that much abuse has weakened my clutch again, may be looking to strip that in the near future.

Arrow Many little parts ready to go in such as wheel bearings etc, just need to make the time to fit them.

*Exclamation Here's the last kick in the balls, totally couldn't be helped and it's an obvious crippling blow...
Today was supposed to be a no bike day but I had to use it for an essential trip into Worcester,
Upon my return into Malvern I pulled over and turned off the bike to make a call,
when I started her back up I heard and odd sound so turned it back off yet it kept sparking Shocked turned the ignition back on and it would feed fuel and run...
hit the kill switch and it would still spark.

Like an idiot I panicked, jumped off and kicked it into first
(Please don't ask what was going through my head) but of course the bike lurched froward and I dived onto it and grabbed the clutch just in time and got on...
Rode to my house as safely but quickly as I could fearing that any minute smoke was going to start plooming out, luckily it didn't.

Parked it up and killed everything, ran in to round up some tools to remove the battery, by the time I rushed back out it had died and I frantically started to remove the seat... as I did the battery popped the cover strip and started to smoke, I disconnected the terminals aqafp and removed the battery, managing to avoid the fumes.
This time I am correct in saying the reg is fucked? Laughing

I do love that bike Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes

first of all, i would say that the poor little 400 is in need of maintainance. but hey, i know what its like, ive got a nc29 thats very hungry for parts due to the previous owner neglecting fuck out the poor little thing. it soundslike that battery is massivley overcharged maybe. now, what a regulator/rectifier does is regulate the power output from you alternator, and in turn, directs current directly from you regulator to the battery, and powers the lights and stuff like that a i think. it also turns the current from your alternator- which should be sumthing like 70v AC for example, and sends it to your battery at around 14-15 Volts DC (for example). me and my dad were having a discussion earlier about reg/recs. in theory if a reg/rec fails, i should not charge your battery at all. its duff, dead, buggerd or which ever you may prefer. now, my dad recons that inside a reg/rec you have little diodes, i think he said diode anyway. but if they fuse together and melt for example, it would actualy send all that current to your battery and basicly fry it, in the worse case, boil it or even explode!. the first thing i would do is buy a new battery. when you have a new battery, i would get a multi meter and start testing. if youve got a manual, that would help, or if you need any advice with anything to do with your bike, come and speak to us over on greybike. www.400greybike.info
thers defo sum1 on there that will give you some pointers to test your charging system, i would like to tell you but i dont know your bike well enough, there too expensive for me. lol

Veze, I really wish you would stop posting workshop advice masquerading as 400GB spam.

In any case, your reg/rec has fried killing the battery in the process. You don't need to be an expert in that one.

Might I suggest buying a new one and also bolting a 12v DC fan to the top of the fins to keep it cool. Its location is crap and it doesn't get any airflow, it then overheats and blows up taking out all and sundry connected to it.

I've got a fan on mine, and drilled holes in the underneath of the RH fairing to scoop air into it.

HTH
Thumbs Up

I'm a bike mechanic, I know exactly what a rectifier does and I'm aware that is responsible for the battery frying.
I don't see how that should have anything to do with the engine turning over and sparking even when the killshitch has been hit so I'm going to have to investigate further, just looking for common casuses, really should consult my haines fault finding section Mr. Green
The bike is well maintained, I'm just constantly broke, it's getting to that age and I ride it very hard, overall my biggest problem is finding the money to keep it ship shaped.

I've looked into improved cooling or positioning of the rec before Timmeh but your solution seems to be ideal so I'll go for that. Thumbs Up

check the earths on every part of the spark/killswitch system, one dodgy earth/short and it will all go haywire.

besides, I thought youd given that thing the full spangly overhaul about 6 months ago? and now it needs it again? you so need a cheap hack mate. Laughing

lol, try 3 months ago. I've never passed an MOT without trouble, I have a knack for wearing things out, even the brand new tyres on the CG's that I rented last year went back half eaten after just a week each time... Talking of which I'm in the market for a CG now, thinking about taking Elisha off the road for a while.
What I need is some fucker to make a bike that I can afford and that is Liam proof.

you are exactly right, when my regulator melted the battery was so swollen if it had been 5 more minutes it would have exploded centimetres from my legs. luckily the bike cut out first

It runs when the ignition is turned off?

Dieseling?? Carbon build up?

I'm sure someone had this problem before, although that was a 2 smoke...

Also, I'm not very impressed with the quality of EBC brakes. They felt better than my knackered OEM parts, but a switch back to brand new Honda parts made a rather large and noticeable improvement!

Standard Nissin pads are waaaaaay better than the crap that EBC sell!

NO, it turns over with the ignition and kills witch off, turn the key and it will instantly fire up.
Hadn't thought of dieseling but tbh it's not the problem here... still isn't going to cause the plugs to spark and never ever ever do short journeys, even if I'm supposed to go somewhere around town I take a good long detour to avoid it being a short trip... I ride like that to prevent carbon buildup in the first place.

Mac, just in case you didn't know - the start switch is supposed to work with the killswitch in either position.

Thumbs Up
