First off i'd recommend checking out the hundreds of video's on here and youtube even if it's just to get an idea of body position and speed.

when confident, go roundabout surfing

* waits for everyone to post their knee down pics * Thumbs Up

Don't be, when you see pics like this you realise how minor getting your knee down is Laughing

i can do it on a straight bit of road if it's not too narrow.

God damn I need to buy some brave pills.

Saying that, the TRX is so much smaller and lighter than the 7R and it does feel happier changing direction quickly. Just need to get used to the correct power delivery pre corner.

Most modern tyres will be more than capable of knee down. Roundabouts is your best option because you can just keep going around and around, it is mostly down to body positioning, you'll be hanging off and it'll feel like you're really off the bike but chances are you wont be hanging off anywhere as much as it feels Smile

Just get the balls of your feet onto the edge of the footpeg, get a whole butt cheek off the seat, drop the inside shoulder and try to look through the mirror. It'll feel weird at first, if it feels unstable, you need to 'lock' yourself into the bike with your outside knee on the tank, ideally you should be in a position where you can remove you hands by the bars and you wont fall off!

Keep the revs fairly average and see what happens Smile

It is pretty easy, I'd recommend using a high gear, so any throttle movement doesn't upset the bike too much. Build up speed and adopt the position mentioned above.

I have always known I was close without trying, but i either wear jeans or textiles, would the textiles grip? (internal body armor) It would be nice to see what it feels like.

Textiles would almost certainly snag, although I doubt it would be enough to pull you off the bike. Not a good idea though. You can get knee sliders that mount on your legs on the outside of jeans etc but I've heard they move around too easily.

Cheers

Did some roundabout surfing the other week on a quiet industrial estate but the roads just weren't smooth enough... I got so close to binning the thing I don't know how I stayed on. Felt like I was hanging off the edge of the world but I bet I was miles from touching the road.

Anyone know a decent roundabout in the Reading/Bracknell area for a wannabe (albeit talentless) Rossi to have a realistic chance of getting his knee-down on a VFR?

Theale used to be the place of choice but I've no idea what the surface is like now - my roundabout surfing days are well behind me. Laughing

Cheers - I'll head out that way and see how it looks. Is a big roundabout or a small one better? I was giving it a go on that roundabout just by Dell but I didn't like the surface.

The Bracknell Southern Industrial Area can get pretty quiet sometimes and there're some newish roundabouts, with a good enough surface.
These three are not bad and you can see if a car's coming from any direction easily.

I knee downed on my new Gilera the day I got it, handles like a dream. This was on a roundabout in an industrial state near me which is quiet enough to surf the roundabout backwards so you scrape your left slider. Laughing.

Raise the ride height 10 or 12 mm, the 7 will turn quicker and the front end can take it.... Wink

On the subject of being pulled off the bike...

Depends on your sliders, go for some plastic ones to start with, leather ones look cool when they are smoking cos of the heat, but they grab like a b*stard the second you knee goes down!

and in big or small roundabouts....

Bigger ones (like motorway ones) you will have to go quicker for the same lean angle so as to not change lanes, smaller ones you will have to go slower, but more wobbly and throttle control will be more important.

Talk to the local sportsbikers, they will tell you where the local KD roundabouts are, and they might just help you Wink

peanut roundabout is where i learnt my craft Wink

(the aroundabout between windsor, ascot and sunningdale)

one end sweeps round then tightens up. great for an initial touch, but the other side offers a good sweep the whole way round giving you some good grinding time. then the short 'straights' between the curves give you some thinking time to sort body position etc..

3rd gear for smoothness and off you go Very Happy
