What's the coolest mobile out now?

Apart from the iPhone, what's the coolest phone to have right now? My daughter has stunned us with straight-A GCSE results (nine of them A*'s), and I want to treat her to a new phone. Currently she's on O2 but I don't mind switching networks since she's out of contract. She has a Sony Ericsson W850i at the moment I think.

I've been using a xda for a few years so I'm out of touch with 'normal' phones.

What's best and why?

iPhone for the fail. She will have to have it out to fiddle with it every time there's a lapse in conversation, just to justify having an overpriced poser toy.
As such iPhone is VERY uncool. Consider an alternative with an edge of coolness. Think LG do a pretty good one, or if she doesn't like touchscreen (I personally HATE touchscreen) get one with the flip under keyboard.

Either that or buy something with more longevity than a phone. Apple make sure all their products are obsolete* within a year so you buy the "Next Gen Apple WTFBBQ Mark III" which only costs £100 quid more than the previous £350 gadget.
If you're not after longevity, it's novelty you're a-wantin'. In which case buy her one of those headsets that plug into TV-VCR-DVD-XBOX-PS3-iPhone-LAPTOP, and display an autofocused equivalent of a 66" screen. I know I'm getting one come payday, as they have finally made them good.

Iphone fail.

HTC magic FTW. Tis touchscreen, has a free market place so lots of games and cool little gadgets, built in maps n GPS etc. Great for internet (facebook myspace twitter etc).

Basically, its a GREAT phone. Like an iphone, but better, cheaper and COOLER.

Only let down? Battery life is 2 days with light useage. Apart from that, it's perfect and I love mine

Can get em on quite good contracts aswell, mines 30 quid, 600 mins unlimited text n internet, but can get that for around 25 now, or get better deals at phones4u/vodafone

Nokia 5800 FTW. Iphone's are cool, but your purchase price is just the beginning, there's a few decent free apps out there but just about everything else you have to dig into your pocket for.

May not be the coolest phone, but it certainly has robustness on it's side.

Drop proof (up to two stories), water proof, dust proof, heat proof.

The first time she drops the iPhone the screen will shatter. They are crap.

Personally I'm sick to death of all these really "cool" electronic devices being so poorly made, and Apple seem to be the worse offender.

I'm with SlimRick - i sold my iphone and bought a 5800.

It depends if you want to 'look' cool, or have a decent phone.

yes the iphone will look cooler than the 5800, but IMO the 5800 is a better phone at a fraction of the cost.
