LED indicators vrs. Tell tale in dash

I not long ago got my first bike, a Sachs 125.

The problem is that its first owner put LED indicators on and now the dash tell tale only works for one side.

Electrics aren't really my bag so and I have no idea where to start... HELP?

Oh, and MOT time is only a week away so there is no pressure to get it sorted. Bugger!

Its just a single bulb that serves both left and right flashers and the bulb works for the left side but not the right?

Apparently its something to do with the LEDs being lower voltage than the standards, but why does it work one way and not the other.

Like I said, electricity is a mystery to me!

Educated guess is that it will be the way the tell tale is wired. You'll need a wiring diagram to check, but:

Each side of the indicator circuit left/right will be wired to one terminal on the tell tale bulb. I have no idea how this works, but when the left side is flashing, it gets it's earth through the right hand side bulbs and vice versa. By introducing diodes, this is messed up.

You'll probably need to re-wire the tell-tale to make it work, but you'll need a wiring diagram and some knowledge of how diodes work. And maybe more diodes.

finpos is correct, this is exactly what happened when i stuck some LEDs on the rvf for a giggle.

In a nutshell you have to change a fair bit, if it works like my bike then I ended up having to lose the single bulb altogether and use 2 12v flashing LEDs to do the job. I spliced into the loom where the switchgear connects to the main harness. You can't just wire a normal bulb to both ends else you create a short and both sets of indicators will flash in either position. A diagram explains it best.

The only flaw in this is of course that the telltale will flash even if the indicators don't work. Not sure if this is an MOT fail or not.

I suspect that I'll end up using your idea and changing it slightly by just picking up some cheap standard indicators for the sake of the test.

After that though I'll maybe give them a go again, I don't like being beaten by daft things like that!!
