Crusty Foot pegs

On my bike the pegs and the hanger are sort all one piece, they are looking a bit messy because the paint is flaking. I want to try and polish them up using the autosol stuff, how would I go about doing this? As in prep-ing the surface etc.

just get some paint striper take all the paint of then give them a sand paper down with like 1000 grit then autosol unless you want a mirror finish then go to about 1500-2000 grit, then buff and then autosol

If they're a painted part, then won't they rust when you remove the paint?
