MOT?

Just wondering, what are the police like with vehicles that haven't been MOT'd? Seeing as you don't get a reminder I can't help but think they'd only slap your wrist. My bike is due it's first MOT next year so I'm wondering what would happen if I was late getting it checked or something... surely lots of people forget.

youll find on your insurance somewhere it will say you need to have an MOT. therfore not having one voids your insurance. and the police will do you for driving with no insurance. which is 6 points and a £200 fine last time i checked.

you make it sound like your planning on not getting it MOTd?

Consequences of driving without an MOT

Driving without a valid MOT certificate is an offence under Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and, although conviction for this offence will not result in penalty points being placed on a driving licence, it carries a maximum fine of £1000. What's more, driving without a valid MOT certificate automatically invalidates the insurance policy and should a driver be involved in an accident, they themselves would have to foot the bill for the damages, amounting to an average of £2,450.

As you have no insurance because of the above...

The penalties for driving without insurance against third party risk are a maximum fine of £5,000, the automatic endorsement of an offender's licence with 6-8 penalty points and possible disqualification.

On 1 June 2003 driving uninsured became an offence for which, instead of prosecution, a fixed penalty could be offered. The level of the fixed penalty was set at £200 plus 6 penalty points.

For drivers still within the 2-year probationary period prescribed by the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995, a conviction, or fixed penalty notice for driving without insurance leads, in addition to a possible fine, to the revocation of their driving licence and the necessity to retake a driving test.

The government said that detection of the offence and therefore the possibility of better enforcement will be increased significantly by the expanded use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology which enables the police to make immediate checks against relevant databases, including the Motor Insurers' Database (MID).

How wrong I was

Ok then, cheers. My scooter wasn't MOTd for about a month, but I wasn't driving it at the time, luckily.

Aye I was out of MOT for over a month too.

(just didnt notice) so pretty sure it dosnt come up on ANPR.
On the way to get MOT you dont need to have one as long as you have an appointment booked aswell.

ive been stopped with not mot but had everything else, i was done only for no mot. i think it only messes up your insurance should you crash etc as the car was not road worthy or not worth anything.

i expect some high and mighty replies may follow this post but the fact is ive been pulled having no mot and not been done for everything, just no mot.

edited to add that driving without a current MOT does not invalidate third party Insurance. Insurance Companies can not do so. (Section 148 RTA 1988).
