PostPosted: 16:36 - 30 Aug 2009    Post subject: DIY ER6F Touring Seat.. Reply with quote

First a bit of history.. I've had my ER6F for 2 years now and enjoy
everything about it except the seat !! It had got to the point
where either I did something about the seat (again) or bought a
new bike.

On Friday last week I test drove a secondhand '07 BMW F800ST
(£5500) and an '07VFR800 (£6000). Actually preferred the Beemer
as it was a bit more comfy(lot better than the ER6). But, on
reflection I don't really want to spend 5 grand on a bike just to
cure numb bum/squashed-bollock problems ! So thought I'd have
a last ditch DIY attempt at fixing the crap standard seat.

The first attempt was a custom Bagster seat which I've had fitted
for a year which is a slight improvement on the standard seat, but
a trip up to Chester from the south coast was excruciating after
only 100miles.

So, what have I done ? Simply put and simply executed, I've
bought 2 bicycle gel seat covers and superglued them to the foam of
my standard seat. The gel covers were £13 from Halfords and the
staple gun (needed to put the seat cover back on) was £10 from
Argos. The job was pretty easy, taking about 2 hours, and results
feel good on a short half hour trip today. Bum = Very Happy

Only down side is that the bicycle gel covers are pretty obvious to
see, but if it fixes the comfort issues I really don't care ! Besides for
short journeys I can attach my other custom seat when looks
matter..

Here's some pics :

i) The gel cover used (cut back to gel only) :

ii) In position (tried them in a few different places before
super-gluing to foam)

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a392/martinthorn/DSC00859.jpg

iii) Nail/staple gun used to fix the seat cover back on, yes you can
still see the gel covers !

iv) finished seat on the bike

Will report further after a long journey..

Martin

ps. disclaimer : If you try this at home don't blame me if you cock up !

That looks so shit. Laughing

But Thumbs Up for doing it. My Versys seat isn't exactly comfy neither.

The TRX has a seat like a house brick! Its got a few scuffs here and there, could do with a recover and maybe a little extra padding. Not quite sure I'd use a bicycle seat like that though.

For a bike supposed to be able to do a bit of touring that's
a bad effort by Kawasaki..

I was gunna suggest you were a bit of a tart for taking looks over comfort on something as important as a seat, but looking at the pictures id do the same if my seat looks like its got 2 cocks hidden in it. Laughing

Good on you for actually modifying something to make it better instead of buying an expensive alternative though.

Cheers
John

Could the seats not have been cut into inch sized cubes and the even evenly across the seat before recovering?

Yep, did think about chopping 'em up into pieces but my other
half persuaded me that in doing so they may leak in the manner
of dodgy silicone breast implants !

It's an innovative way around a common problem, so Thumbs Up for that.
Why not do what a lot of American tourers do (NB: not chopper whores, tourers), and try a sheepskin? It looks a little extravagant, but it's comfortable as hell, I'm told...

There's a guy at the Rufforth autojumble (1st Saturday of every month, near York) that does custom seat recovering, and has a lovely foam and all sorts of gel that they can put under and mould it to your arse and what not. Not sure of the business name but might be worth a look?

I did think about using a dragonboat gel seat cover (see link)
but the bicycle covers were a bit more convenient to get hold of.
Might help in your case ?

Hilarious approach, won't your bollocks just slide between the two seats now? I'm curious to see the outcome

Two pleasure rides and two commutes done and so far it's a huge improvement on buttock'n'bollock comfort..

Could splash out on an Air hawk seat... very comfy once you get used to them... although not so good when it gets wet.

i was thinking couldnt you get a cheap big peice of memory foam ( or mabey a not so cheap peice )

Copy the standard foam shape and glue the memory foam to the platic seat base ? would look the same as the stadard seat but the foam would mold around you bottom. but then again depnece on how thin the layer of foam on you seat is.

= Nice seat and good looks mabey a bit expensive but worth it all depences on how much the foam costs

I agree, i would have the memory foam or a piece of gel the right size and shape. If you are going to go to the trouble of removing the vinyl seat cover you could have at least made the effort to make it look right.
As it is with those lumps in the seat, it looks really shit. It may well be more comfortable but looks wise its a total fail.
