Gear lights?

Me and a work colleague were talking about forgetting what gear we were in and wondered is there such a bike that has light or an indication of what gear you are in?

Just out of curiosity

Does it really matter? Yeah it would be nice, but you know whether to shift up or down, only thing would be a 1st and top indicator, so you dont try and shift down/up again.

Yeah thought of that but just curious there must be someone that has it as a factory bike or someoen modded one at some point.

Just found one from a company Acumen that do them as a add on can learn up to 8 gears apparantly

When I went for my CBT training, there was a Yamaha bike there with a gear indicator built into the clocks. I think it was a SR125, I ended up riding a CG instead so didn't get to play with it.

I think it was stock but it might have been aftermarket. If you listen to your bike eventually you will learn your rev ranges and hopefully be able to tell Smile

I've only ever seen Haotian's with them one... My mate and his dad have them (a Vixen and something else) and they've both got a display for the gear.

Ariel have had them since the introduction of the CP Burman box in about 1935. A little metal indicator that points to numbers on the box itself. Stupid idea, you need to bend so that you can see your foot to use it, I bung the little pointers in the scrap bin when I rebuild one.

My GSX has them built into the instrument pannel. Was standard on some bikes during that era. It's very handy...

For the life of me I cannot fathom why it was not carried on. Anti-dive units yeah but gear indicators?

You will get used to not knowing and it becomes a lot more natural, but still if I am going for a quick ride rather than around town ride I often get messy around first and neutral (still improving) but most common is shifting down into first when I want second-first to second is a huge jump compared with second to third I find.

There is also the issue if you are cruising on the motorway you try and change up again.

The Lifan LF-125 (CG rip-off) I did my CBT on had them (it also had an annoying bleeeeep for the indicators). Thing is, you came to depend on them and I was convinced it wouldn't go into second because '2' wasn't coming up. Instructor rode it around and confirmed it was in second, it just wasn't telling me it was.

the K7 gsxr 750 i test rode had a gear number display too

My GS has one, has tape over it as I know what gear I am in and don't need to be told. There ok for noobies who don't know how to ride yet but once your used to the bike you shouldn't need it.

They're unreliable anyway.

The one on my GSX only works in gears 1-3. The sensor is near the front sprocket so the wires are easily broken.
