ok i know the speed limit is 70 but somethings got me a bit confused......THE FAST LANE.

Lets just say i was sitting in the middle lane doing 70 but wanted to overtake,and my overtake took me to 100,110,120mph,what would happen if i was clocked by a copper?
Are we actually breaking the law by overtaking faster than 70mph on a motorway?


also what happens if you`re clocked having a quick burst upto 130-140 on a motorway but then slowing back down to 70mph after a few hundred metres?Instant ban?
I`m not talking about flying up long stretches of motorway at a constant high speed,just a quick blast.

Do they never show any leniancy in these matters if the excess speed was only to get past a string of traffic?

The limit is 70mph therefore you cannot go faster than 70mph or the police will issue a FPN or issue a summons depending on how fast you get caught at.

Motorways are far too busy nowadays. Too many high & mighty reps & executives. Even doing 70mph is not safe.

There is no such thing as a 'fast lane'. There is only lanes one, two and three. lanes two and three are overtaking lanes.

70mph is the max no matter which lane, but not many people stick to it

If you get pulled over doing 75, 80+, the police arent going to believe your just having a 'short blast'

she says police are quite flexible, most wont pull you for doing about 80...its just pointless.
But anything over usually gets you busted!
obviously if you abuse it you lose it..but i do have occasional bursts..but only at late times, like 10-11pm.. just cos its pretty empty, and its only like 1/2 mile stretch..

There might be more leniency for short bursts of serious speed to overtake on non-dual A roads - where you have the excuse of wanting to get past slow vehicles quickly and safely.
On the motorway you aren't endangering yourself with oncoming traffic; there is no need to rush past then back into the lane you started.

yup well anything in excess of 80 I think they'd probably, depending on 'mood', pull you over. Can't see anyone getting away with 100+ though, that would make their day.

picture this, it's a nice sunny sunday morning and your following a little old lady on her way home from church, she can hardly see 2 feet infont of her and hasn't a clue of anything going on around her and bimbles along at 40 mph in a 60 zone......as they do
Now if i want to overtake the old dear surely it's better to do it quickly and blast past her at 70ish, which would break the 60 limit but would surely be safer than crawling past at a lesser speed?

I am under the impression that somewhere in the legal jargon is an allowance to exceed the speed limit to perform a 'safe' overtake on a normal road (A road etc), but these days a court might decide because you were speeding it was inherently not safe.

Never on motorways, but its not like motorway traffic moves at 70...

My god, I thought bikers knew more because they havee to, there isnt a fast lane the lanes are for over taking only, trucks cant go into the outside lane on a three lane motorway so as not to block the motorway for faster vehicles, if you are overtaking and it becomes dangerous to not speed up then it would be overlooked breaking the speed limit but the cops would have to agree you were in danger, sitting in the middle lane is for twats and novice driver/riders though having said that if its foggy then it is wise to sit in the middle lane as sometimes trucks may break down before they get fully onto the hard shoulder, read your highway code and treat other drivers/riders like they havent

And here was me thinking that there was no law on speeds in this country, purely recommendations for road types as listed in the Highway Code and displayed on the road signs. The same Highway Code which recommends overtakes are done as quickly as possible (with no referances to staying within the speed limits set).

If I am sitting behind someone at 70, who I believe is not driving with their full attention on the road/fluctuating their speed then I will either drop back OR overtake. If I exceed 70 or 80 during the overtake I will not worry at all, as when pulling back in a SAFE distance ahead of them I will be returning to the speed limit all done well within a mile, and obviously displaying to any following po po that the increase in spedd was purely part of the overtaking manouvre in line with HC reccomendations

80 seems to be the accepted speed that most people stick to even though the legal limit is 70... I was following a Police car the other day at 85, he didn't seem too bothered...

Depending on the amount of traffic I will usually stick between the 80-100 mark. If I get caught it will be my fault (I'll still have a good moan though) but most the time there are vehicles behind and in front of me doing similar speeds.
