Some people will disagree but if looked after properly there is no reason why an rs125 wouldnt be up to the job.

By reliable you mean it's gonna be neglected. Here's an idea try keeping up with the service intervals and it will be fine.

I doubt you could rag a CG for 3 years without something going wrong if you don;t take care of it.

If you buy a decent bike pretty much anything with a brand name and follow the service schedule it should be fine.

If you want fast, go 2 stroke, but you will more than likely need to really keep on top of the servicing to keep it in tip top health, plus if you rag the nuts off it everywhere from cold then reliability will suffer badly.

For reliability something like a CG125, not very quick, but will sit at 55 - 60mph all day long and shouldnt throw any major problems at you. From personal experience and having worked on other peoples CG's when they get on a bit (the ones I've been around are 20 odd years old) they have a tendancy to use a bit of oil.

Best mix of the 2 is something like a CBR125 or Yamaha R125, fairly fast, good reliability (on the oldest R125's check its had the recall, something to do with the fuel tank/fuel pump having problems)

I've been impressed by my CG, parts are easy to obtain (and at good prices) fuel economy is through the roof (try 120mpg on an average long run) has lasted over 14k with hardly any problems (none serious) and its dead comfortable Very Happy

plug(s) air, oil and possibly fuel filter (although the fuel can just get cleaned) change the oil, depending on what service you're in for you could have the valve clearances done, change brake pads, fluid, possibly discs if needs be. if you have a multi-carb engine they could need syncronising. so quite a bit more than just plugs and air filter Smile

oil, oil filter, depending on what service they will also check the entire bike over, brake fluid/brake seals etc, read the manual to see what it says will be completed at each interval

but like said if you arent going to keep on top of it and generally treat it like crap your guna shag it regardless of what you get

edit: beaten ^^

Chain and sprockets, greasing bearings etc. Lubing the chain, bleeding the brakes. + all that was said above and probably lots more.

my Derbi GPR 125 is 3 years old to day & I've not managed to knacker it yet, I've had 93 out of it

I ran it in properly & got it serviced at the correct times

had a new starter motor under gaurantee & a new chain two weeks ago (my own fault for not lubing it)

had some issues with it fouling plugs every other day when the numpty mechanic who did my 1st service thought it would go faster if he took the fuse out of the emu but once I sust out what the idiot had done & put it right, it's been fine ever since

I've run down to croydon & back (from brum) following my bro on his triumph tiger & he wasn't hanging about & I regularly do 80 mile round trips on it to visit family, most of which is on dual carageways where I sit at a steady 85 for most of it

so you want to get a brand new bike then shag it to death, leave it to rot outside and not maintain it....

pointless! Mr. Green

yzf..its not slow as shit, it keeps u at the learner legal limit...looks good, costs peanuts to run, if you warm it up and run it in how its supposed to you have hit about 80, which to me is fine for an obvious learner.

Lol 80?

Never mind the fact it does 0-60 in around *forever*, it won't reach 80. My friend owns one and he struggles to sit around 70 once it's taken him forever to get there.

It's as slow as shit.

Well, I had an RS125 for a year and it was the most un-reliable bike I've ever known. It was broken more times than it was working. I was taking it out daily and blasting it (above the speed limit as you say) and it held up for about 6 weeks at a time before breaking again.

My sister just got a YZFR 125 last month to learn on and I had to ride it back 20 miles from the dealership. I can't believe how slow them things are compared with my old RS125. I honestly thought I had stalled the bike several times at traffic lights because I couldn't hear the engine idling.

I don't know how reliable some of the other 2 strokers are but stay away from the RS125's unless you want to constantly chuck money at it and spend more time in recovery vehicles than on the bike.

btw... whoever said a YZFR 125 can reach 80mph is chatting smashed up smarties. I've ridden my sisters flat out, down hill, an it struggled to reach 50.

So much cancer that you had to post it twice.

If you can't fix it, don't ride it. Highly-strung stokers like the full-power RSs, mitos and TZRs will go forever if you look after them.

But you have to put in the spanner time and keep on top of the maintenance.

Good luck trying to keep hold of your license, if the rozzers see somone riding a stroker with just trakkies on they'll instantly pull you over as a) they can guarantee its not learner-legal and b) you were probably speeding anyway.

mate

if youre buying new just get an rs125

theyre reliable so long as you look after em and let em warm up. the reason most of em run shit is because theyre owned by idiot 17 year olds who thrash em from day 1

but by the sound of it you would be able to kill a cg in a week Wink

Yam DT125R -
Kawa KMX125

I have a 04 Sachs ZZ with the Yam DT125 engine in, for about 2 years i used it everyday and the most i had to do with it was fill it with petrol/oil.
Got a top speed of 90 indicated (80-85) but that was with a stock can and short gear ratio - got to 60 quicker then most.
KMX's are reliable and pretty quick but look a bit dated.

Go with a Yam engine Thumbs Up
