OK I need to start eating healthier, or at the very least with more variety as the only things I know how to "cook" are oven chips, beans and cod/southern fried chicken Laughing

So I'm thinking a cook book may well be the way forward, needs to have ingredients, how to and preferably a picture so that I know what it's meant to look like Laughing

MUST be simpleish, proper meals that a 24 year old bloke would actually bother to cook/eat.... looked at some books in sainsburys today and a "meal" for some of them was some crappy salmon paste in a tiny little cup.. WTF? Laughing

Thinking maybe Jamie Oliver type stuff may be the answer here?

All them things I find comercial and ingrediants that cant even be got. My parents buy things like cook books and end up throwing them to me and I cant see anything I want in them. But If I use google I can, and its free.

I have a large selection of books - mainly Jamie Oliver.

You can find simple recipes online - look at the BBC website.

Another one I rather like is this one, however it's a bit more advanced.

Why not start with simple favourites like Lasagne, Pizza, Risottos etc.
Pizza is good fun to make - especially if you put the effort into making the base yourself Wink

If lasagne is classed as "simple" then I think I'm doomed! Laughing

Will accept online recipe link ideas too if anyone knows good ones Thumbs Up

Anything by Rick Stein is a must...most of his recipes are easy to follow, very healthy (if you consider he does lots of fish, mediterranean or SEAsian foods), he makes food interesting and exciting and a must to cook. Thumbs Up

My mum bought me this in an attempt to encourage me to cook more variable stuff, its called Nosh 4 students and is rated quite highly.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nosh-Students-Student-Cookbook-previous/dp/0954317939/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252012048&sr=8-1

Focus is on cheap, and quick to prepare, some of the things look quite tasty and enough variation to keep you going.

Problem with cookbooks, and they are all guilty of it, is that 50% of the ingredients you will never have in your cupboards if you don't have more than a passing interest in cooking.

Furthermore if you dont like the thing, will never use them again. It therefore involves a trip to a supermarket, often looking for things that you havent a clue where to find or what they look like.

I 'cook' when I can be arsed, but its really simple stuff, and every meal will involve boiled potatoes and some sort of vegetable that is simply peeled and boiled. Seasoning involves a salt shaker and ketchup. Luckily enough, although I like nice food, bland food doesn't bother me much.

If you fancy that book, I can post it to you for postage cost.

The student book sounds ideal. Where I live is great for ingredients, my local shop sells five types of chilli and hundreds of spices. for recipes I just talk to the people in the street and can get ideas from all over the world. Anyway it is Ramadan ATM and I get to share food with friends as they break the fast some nights Very Happy

I have some books called 'cooking for blokes' real nice and simple. To be honest you don't need them to eat healthy.

Go to Iceland and get loads of frozen veg, maybe some chops or chicken whatever takes your fancy. Easy way is to microwave the veg in a bowl with cling film over the top for about 5 minutes. Chicken/chops/steak/whatever takes between 30 and 50 minutes in the oven.

The other option for veg is a steamer. Buy new potatoes. That way you don't need to peel them. Cut into quarters and bang them in the bottom part of the steamer which is filled 1/4 to 1/2 with water. Stick some veg in the next part of the steamer. Turn the cooker on full until the water in the bottom is boiling then turn it down until the water is simmering, or just bubbling. Leave it for about 25 minutes and it should be done, to check stab the 'tatas, any resistance and you need to leave them a bit longer.

Cooking is fecking easy.
